MONROE, La. – The ULM women's basketball team (4-1, 0-0 Sun Belt) suffered defeat for the first time this season as they fell to Sam Houston State (4-1, 0-0 CUSA) 57-34. The Warhawks were held back by 36 turnovers over the course of the entire game.
Â
Marcavia Shavers led the team with eight points and a season high 12 rebounds on a night where ULM did not have a single player reach double figures in points for the first time this season.
Asjah Inniss and
Keshunti Nichols finished closely behind with six points each.Â
Â
The Bearkats jumped out to a 9-0 lead to start the game as the Warhawks struggled with turnovers out of the gate. ULM were guilty of 13 turnovers in the first quarter alone, but defense kept the deficit to just seven as the first quarter expired.
Â
ULM would begin to punch back in the second quarter by flipping the script and forcing SHSU to turn the ball over. The Warhawks would cut the deficit down to just two points on two separate occasions on a free throw by
Asia Barclay and off of a nice feed from Inniss to Nichols for a layup. The Bearkat offense woke up to close the quarter while more turnovers by the Warhawks pushed the host's lead to 10 at the halftime break.
Â
SHSU effectively shut the door on ULM in the third quarter as the home side outscored the Warhawks 19-5 prior to seeing out the game in the fourth quarter. ULM were able to hold the Bearkats to 39.2% shooting on the night and forced 26 turnovers, but they were held to 22.2% shooting themselves and saw their 36 turnovers converted into 26 SHSU points.
Â
ULM will have the opportunity to bounce back at home as they host Lamar on Sunday. Tipoff at Fant-Ewing Coliseum is scheduled for 2 p.m.
