FOLEY, Ala. – The ULM soccer team (13-3-4, 6-0-4 Sun Belt) fell in the Sun Belt Championship match to the Texas State Bobcats (10-4-6, 5-1-4 Sun Belt) with a 1-0 score. Neither team was able to find a score in the first half, but a goal in the 53
rd minute secured the lead and eventual victory for the Bobcats.
Texas State had the advantage over ULM in shots (10-3) and corner kicks (7-3), a rarity for the Warhawks. Goalkeeper
Jen Handy captured four saves in the match, her third-straight match with four saves.
Skylar Blaise led the team with two shots on the evening, one on target.
Leane Commaret also notched a shot in the match.
A back-and-forth first half had both teams battling for dominance, as both backlines prevented shots for the first 22 minutes. The Warhawks were able to draw two corners early, but the Bobcats prevented any conversions.
Once the shots broke open, however, Texas State took full advantage. Picking up five corners in the first 45 minutes, Handy collected two saves. The Warhawk defense also blocked three shots to keep the score even. Blaise notched the first shot of the night for ULM, the Bobcats diving to get the save and prevent the Warhawk goal.
The second half gave Texas State the momentum needed to dive in offensively. After a ULM yellow card, the Bobcats advanced into enemy territory, freshman Sadie Guzman breaking away for the score in the 53
rd minute.
The Bobcats continued to find opportunities, but Handy was able to grab some saves with the defensive line supporting the effort. Commaret and Blaise knocked in more shots, on the hunt for the equalizer. But the Bobcats maintained control of the ball as the clock ran down. With the 1-0 score, Texas State broke ULM's 15-match unbeaten streak for the tournament title.
The Warhawks walk away with their first Sun Belt regular season title, Coach of the Year and Player of the Year honors, along with five all-conference selections. 13 wins is the most wins for the program since 2004, collecting seven shutouts on the season. After the team was pegged to finish seventh in the conference, the team emerges on top of the standings and advancing to the championship match for the first time ever.
