Johnson Hits 1,000 Career Points at Lafayette

Three Warhawks scored in double figures against the Ragin’ Cajuns in the loss.

LAFAYETTE, La. – The ULM women's basketball team (9-16, 5-9 Sun Belt) fell to the Ragin' Cajuns (12-12, 8-6 Sun Belt) with a historic milestone for Jakayla Johnson, who hit 1,000 career points in the fourth quarter. Two more Warhawks also hit double-digits in Lafayette.

Meloney Thames tallied four triples, leading the team for the second-consecutive game with 18 points. Nya Valentinereached double-digits as well, scoring 12 points and shooting 7-7 from the free throw line. Johnson had 10 points, including a three-pointer, also logging five rebounds, a block and a steal. Sakyia White picked up 10 boards in her third-consecutive game grabbing 10+ rebounds.

The Ragin' Cajuns got started early, scoring a quick four to create a lead. Katlyn Manuel opened the scoring for the Warhawks with a pullup jumper. Erica Lafayette of the Cajuns hit a three, but Thames returned the favor with two back-to-back triples, giving ULM the one-point lead with seven minutes left in the quarter. Two scoring runs for the Cajuns got them back in front, even as the Warhawks continued to fight back. Laila Walker contributed in the rally along with Thames, recording a three-point play and a few layups. The second quarter started off hot for the Cajuns, as they went on another scoring run, eventually shooting 13-16 from the field. A three-point play for Thames kept the Warhawks in it, until a scoring drought for ULM and another run for the Cajuns created a double-digit deficit for the Warhawks, closing the half, 27-48.

Johnson got hot in the second half, picking up a steal and scoring the three-point play. Two more threes from Thames cut the lead down to 10, as the Cajuns entered a scoring drought. Five turnovers from the Cajuns gave the Warhawks the chance to make a comeback, but as soon as the drought came for the Cajuns, it flipped to ULM, sending the Ragin' Cajuns on an 11-1 run. A three-pointer for the Ragin' Cajuns extended their lead, even as ULM continued to fight back. With a jumper and a three-pointer, Johnson entered double figures and the 1,000-point mark in the fourth quarter. The Warhawks battled until the final seconds, but were unable to find the rally, falling 60-80.

The Warhawks will return home on Thursday (Feb. 20) to take on Troy for the second time this season. Tipoff in Fant-Ewing Coliseum is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. for the Black History Month game.
