Women’s Basketball Preview: Troy

The Warhawks are on the hunt for their first win over Troy since 2016.

 MONROE, La. – ULM women's basketball team (9-16, 5-9) returns home to play their final two home games of the season, facing the Troy Trojans (17-10, 11-3). Tip-off in Fant-Ewing Coliseum is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Thursday (Feb. 20). The Warhawks are on the hunt for a win to break a losing streak, while the Trojans are looking to capitalize off a Sun Belt win streak.
 
SERIES HISTORY –
The Warhawks and the Trojans will be competing for the 33rd time in the series, ULM looking to break a 14-game losing streak and claim their first win over Troy since 2016. The first matchup between ULM and Troy was on Dec. 4, 1998 in Albuquerque, N.M., a 67-47 Warhawk win. The teams played three times last year, finishing the 2024 series on April 1, 2024, when the Trojans defeated ULM 75-89 in Troy in the Great 8 of the WNIT. Most recently, the Trojans claimed a win in Trojan Arena over ULM, defeating them 71-84 on Feb. 15, 2025.
 
SCOUTING THE TROJANS –
The Trojans are looking to continue on a Sun Belt win streak, defeating Southern Miss in Trojan Arena most recently. Zay Dyer leads the team in points per game (12.7), also leading in rebounds (10.3). Dyer has won back-to-back Sun Belt Player of the Week awards this season, tallying a conference-high 11 double-doubles. Ashley Baez also averages in double-digits (11.0), leading the team in steals (1.8). The Trojans lead the SBC in rebound margin (11.8), ranking fourth in the NCAA. They lead the nation in rebounds per game (49.6) as well.
 
LEADING THE TEAM –
Jakayla Johnson currently leads the team in points per game (15.4), three-point percentage (.364), assists (81) and steals (45). Johnson is third in the Sun Belt in free throw percentage (.826) and points per game, as well as seventh in field goal percentage (.413). 
 
Sakyia White opened the season going 9-9 vs. Central Baptist (Nov. 4), dropping 18 points and now leads the team in field goal percentage (.464). She then followed up with a 16-rebound performance vs. Tulane (Dec. 21) and two 14-rebound showings, last at Troy (Feb. 12). White also led the team with 19 points at South Alabama (Feb. 8), her fourth game this season leading the team in scoring. White currently leads the team in rebounds per game (8.3) and is second in the Sun Belt. 
 
RAINING TRIPLES –
In conference play, the Warhawks lead the Sun Belt in three-point field goal percentage (.366). The team combined for 10 three-pointers against App State (Feb. 5) for the second time this season, last versus Central Baptist (Nov. 4). Meloney Thames dropped 22 points against Georgia Southern (Jan. 2), shooting five three-pointers, a team-high this season. Just two days later, Nya Valentine hit five shots beyond the arc against Old Dominion, three coming in the final 30 seconds of the game. Valentine went on to go 3-3 from beyond the arc versus Texas State (Feb. 1). Thames has hit five threes in three separate games, most recently at Troy (Feb. 12), scoring 26.
 
1K FOR JK –
By scoring 10 points at the Ragin' Cajuns, senior Jakayla Johnson reached 1,000 career points. Johnson spent one season at Auburn before transferring to ULM for her junior and senior seasons. She is the 19th Warhawk to reach the milestone, first reached by Marlena Mossbarger (1977-80). Johnson has posted 386 points so far this season to reach the 1,000 mark.

LOOKING AHEAD –
The women's basketball team will remain home for the final game in Fant-Ewing Coliseum this season, taking on the Ragin' Cajuns on Saturday (Feb. 22). Tip-off for ULM and the Cajuns will be at 2 p.m. The Warhawks will be honoring their seniors on Saturday, as well as the 50th anniversary of ULM Women's Basketball.
