MONROE, La. – The ULM softball team (4-7) defeated the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks (4-7) in the first day of the Warhawk Invitational, their second-straight win at home to maintain an undefeated streak at home. The Warhawks scored 12 runs on 10 hits, including a five-run sixth inning for the win.
ULM got off to an early lead, scoring three runs in the first inning.
Hollie Thomas reached second on a fielding error to collect two RBIs and a sacrifice bunt for
Elle Carter scored Thomas to make the lead 3-0. SFA quickly tied it up, however, with two singles scoring three at the top of the second.
The Warhawks claimed the lead off a
Meagan Brown double in the bottom of the second, with Brown picking up an RBI. Another tie came from a SFA's Chloe Reneau grounding out to allow Ella Hill to score and make it a 4-4 game. Another fielding error for the Lumberjacks in the bottom of the third scored two more Warhawks to give them the lead for the third time.
A run scored off a single in the fourth inning for SFA made it a close matchup halfway through the contest. An additional run for ULM off a
Maddie Nichols single kept the deficit at two for SFA going into the sixth inning.
Five hits for the Warhawks in the bottom of the sixth scored five runs to give ULM to largest lead of the night. Three-straight singles for ULM loaded the bases, a single to left field for
Meagan Brown gave her an RBI.
Morgan Brown walked to score another and Thomas singled up the middle for the third run of the inning. A walk by
Maryssa Zenzen and a sacrifice fly by Nichols scored the fourth and fifth runs of the inning, making it a 12-5 score.
Three runs in the top of the seventh for the Lumberjacks gave SFA life, but wasn't enough to tie it up in Day 1 of the Warhawk Invitational, ULM claiming the win, 12-8.
Hollie Thomas scored four runs on two hits to lead the team, picking up two RBIs as well.
Brooklin Lippert scored three runs on a hit, picking up the lone two stolen bases for the team.
Meagan Brown picked up a double, two RBIs and scored a run.
Dakota Lake was credited with the win, pulling a 3-2 record this season. Lake pitched five innings, allowing 10 hits, four runs and two walks.
The softball team will continue in the Warhawk Invitational this weekend, welcoming Stephen F. Austin, Houston Christian, Eastern Illinois and Southern University to Monroe.
