Men's Basketball Preview: Georgia State

The Warhawks wrap up a three-game road trip on Wednesday at Georgia State.

TIP-OFF

The ULM men's basketball team (6-18, 2-9) wraps up its road trip in Atlanta with a matchup against Georgia State (8-15, 4-7) on Wednesday, Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. ET/6 p.m. CT. The Warhawks look to bounce back after their two-game winning streak was snapped last time out at Troy. 

A win against the Panthers on Wedneasday night would be wins in three out of four Sun Belt games for the Warhawks after starting the season 0-8 in conference play. ULM trails Georgia State by two games in the SBC standings with seven league games remaining on the schedule.

SERIES HISTORY –

The Panthers lead the all-time series 12-9 dating back to 1975 and have won four of the last five matchups, but ULM took home the win in the last meeting with a 66-58 victory in Monroe. The Warhawks last won in Atlanta in 2018 with a 90-82 win. 

SCOUTING THE PANTHERS –

Georgia State has lost five of its last six games, including a four-point loss at App State last weekend. They currently sit ahead of the Warhawks at 12th place in the Sun Belt standings tied with in-state rival Georgia Southern. 

Cesare Edwards enters as the biggest scoring threat for Georgia State, averging 15.8 points per game and is also second on the team in rebounds with 6.7 rebounds per game. Toneari Lane and Zarique Nutter are also leaders in scoring with 14.6 and 13.6 points per game, respectively. 

RICHARD ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT AT CONCLUSION OF SEASON–

ULM men's basketball coach Keith Richard announced on Friday (Dec. 20) his intention to retire at the conclusion of the 2024-25 season. Richard will complete his 15th season as the head coach of ULM men's basketball. Richard inherited a program saddled with APR sanctions and guided the Warhawks to four postseason appearances in five years. Richard previously served as the head coach of Louisiana Tech from 1998-2007 and was an assistant at LSU from 2008-10 before being named ULM's head coach and has accumulated over 300 victories as a head coach.

FAMILIAR FACES –

The Warhawks welcome back 10 players from the 2023-24 roster including starters Tyreese Watson, Jalen Bolden and Jerry Ngopot. Key role players including Jacob Wilson, Makai Willis and AD Diedhiou are also back after playing in more than 10 games last season.

KEY ADDITIONS –

The 2024 ULM men's basketball signing class featured four new Warhawks to the 2024-25 roster. ULM signed two high school prospects (Micah Caster & Renars Sondors), one four-year transfer  (Coltie Young) and one junior college transfer (Ta'Zir Smith) in the 2024 class. Additionaly, Phil Cunningham was introduced as an assistant head coach during the offseason. Cunningham brings over 25 years of collegiate coaching experience at the Division I level.

MILESTONE WATCH –

Senior guard Coltie Young enters Saturday's game just three points shy of the 1,000 career points milestone. Young played three seasons at Jackson State before transferring to ULM this season and totaled 713 points for the Tigers. Young recorded his third 20-point game of the season with 27 points in ULM's win over South Alabama on Monday and tallied 17 in Thursday's game.

LOOKING AHEAD –

The Warhawks return to Fant-Ewing Coliseum for a matchup with Texas State on Thursday, Feb. 13 at 6:30 p.m.
