ATLANTA -- With his first 3-pointer of the game,
Coltie Young reached 1,000 career points and led the Warhawks with 19 points as the ULM men's basketball team (6-19, 2-10 Sun Belt) fell on the road at Georgia State (9-15, 5-7) on Wednesday (Feb. 5) night at the GSU Convocation Center in Atlanta.
At the 18:14 mark in the first half, Young drilled his first 3-point attempt from the field to reach the 1,000 career point milestone. Young played three seasons at Jackson State before transferring to ULM this season and totaled 713 points for the Tigers. The senior from Starkville, Miss. went on to make five 3-pointers and led ULM with 19 points while adding a pair of assists, a steal and a rebound.
Two other Warhawks joined Young in double figures, including
Jalen Bolden, who scored 17 points and recorded a game high six assists.
Makai Willis netted 12 points and pulled down five boards.
Georgia State's Toneari Lane led all scorers with 22 points and slipped four assists. Malachi Brown generated 19 points while Zarique Nutter posted 18. Jelani Hamilton and Cesare Edwards rounded out the double figure scorers for the Panthers with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
The Panthers converted 15 shots beyond the arc and shot 59.7% from the field. GSU forced the Warhawks to commit 12 turnovers and forced seven steals. ULM was held to eight 3-point buckets and shot 35.9% from the field.
Bolden swished his first look from long distance on a pass by Young to get the Warhawks on the scoreboard. After four straight points by the Panthers, Young knocked down a triple for his 1,000th career point and swung the lead back to the Warhawks. Willis drained ULM's third 3-point bucket and kept the Warhawks in the lead.
Micah Caster, who made his first collegiate start, found
Jerry Ngopot for a jumper in the paint and Bolden skipped a pass to Young for a slam to push ULM's lead to five. Georgia State surged ahead with an 8-0 scoring run and led 16-13 with less than 13 minutes remaining. The Panthers' lead increased to 12 points when Lane made a layup off a steal by Edwards with under 10 minutes to go. Young made his second triple to bring ULM within nine points. The Panthers would control a double-digit lead the remainder of the first half and led 51-30 after one half of play.
Georgia State added to its lead in the second half and outscored the Warhawks 22-10 in the first 10 minutes of the half and led 73-40. Young swished his third 3-pointer of the night with 6:49 left in the game and added another with under five minutes remaining. ULM would not trim GSU's lead to fewer than 30 points in the final five minutes, and the Panthers cruised at home, 97-64.
ULM returns to Fant-Ewing Coliseum on Feb. 13 to take on Texas State at 6:30 p.m.
