Warhawks Open Season Falling to Cardinals in Doubleheader

The ULM softball team were shutout 0-3 in the first game, rallying in the second game before falling, 2-3.

 BEAUMONT, Texas – The ULM softball team (0-2) opened the 2025 season by dropping both games against Lamar (2-0) at the Lamar/Houston Classic in Beaumont, Texas.
 
Game One: Lamar 3, ULM 0
An early run scored by Lamar got the Cardinals to an early 1-0 lead, though the Warhawks continued to battle for the tie. Brooklin Lippert claimed a stolen base and Elle Carter had multiple hits for her first multi-hit game of the season. Another single for the Cardinals in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings ended the game, a 3-0 win for Lamar.
 
Game Two: Lamar 3, ULM 2
A three-run home run by Lamar's Veronica Harrison got Lamar to another early 3-0 lead. As ULM tried to rally back, Carter singled in the first inning and Maddie Nichols hit a double, the first of her career. After a one-inning effort from Mimi BlackledgeDakota Lake entered the circle, pitching five innings, posting three strikeouts and allowing only three hits in five innings. 
 
A double-play by Meagan Brown and Carter in the third inning got momentum swinging in favor of the Warhawks. A scoreless fourth and fifth innings kept ULM's hope alive for a rally. In the sixth inning, a double by Morgan Brown got the Warhawks in position to score, Carys Platt reaching on an error and getting Brown to home plate, closing the gap, 1-3. A few outs and a diving catch by Meagan Brown got ULM in prime position for a seventh-inning comeback. A single by Carter and Lippert reaching on fielder's choice got the Warhawks prepared to score in the top of the seventh inning. Another single by Brown got Lippert to home plate for another run, closing the gap to one run. A third out for ULM closed their rally attempt, giving the Cardinals their second win of the day, 3-2.
 
The Warhawks will remain on the road to take on Houston Christian and Houston on Saturday (Feb. 8). ULM will take on the Huskies at 1 p.m. and then will take on the Cougars at 6:30 p.m. The ULM-Houston matchup will be available to stream on ESPN+.
