SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- The ULM baseball team (5-4) fell to Missouri State (3-6) 11-1 in seven innings on Saturday (March 1) at Hammons Field in Springfield, Mo.
ULM starting pitcher
Landon Grigg recorded a season-high seven strikeouts in the game and struck out four Bears in the first two scoreless innings.
Jake Haggard and
Michelle Artzberger reached base for the Warhawks with a walk and a hit by pitch, respectively. With two outs in the bottom of the third, Missouri State strung together three consecutive doubles and added an RBI single to take an early 3-0 lead after three innings.
After Haggard singled to short,
Bryce Blaser drilled a double to right center that scored Haggard all the way from first base to get ULM on the board. Blaser was moved on a bunt to third but was left at third base following two strikeouts, and the Bears maintained a two-run lead. Grigg struck out the side in the bottom of the fourth inning to bring his punchout total to seven through four innings.
Following a 1-2-3 inning by the Warhawks at the plate, Missouri State broke open the lead with five runs on two hits and five walks or hit by pitches in the bottom half of the fifth inning and led 7-1 after five. The Bears expanded the lead to 10-1 in the sixth and scored the game-winning run in the seventh inning to take game two, 11-1 in seven innings.
Marcus Aranda added an infield base hit for the Warhawks in the top of the seventh inning. ULM tallied three hits with Blaser recording the Warhawks' lone extra-base hit and RBI. On the mound, the Warhawks surrendered 10 hits, seven walks and five hit by pitches to the Bears. Missouri State belted five doubles and tallied 11 RBIs in the team's big offensive showing.
ULM will go for the series win tomorrow (March 2) with game three of the series beginning at 1 p.m. from Hammons Field in Springfield.
