MONROE, La. – The ULM softball team (21-10, 2-0 Sun Belt) claimed the 4-3 win over the Georgia State Panthers (8-20, 0-2 Sun Belt) on Saturday afternoon (March 15) at the ULM Softball Complex, securing the series win. After finding an early lead, the Warhawks found themselves down a run going into the seventh. A walk-off double gave ULM the win for the day, extending their home win streak.
A two-run inning in the first gave ULM the early lead, as
Meagan Brown hit a double and subsequently stole third, crossing home off an error for the first run. A
Morgan Brown single and a double from
Maryssa Zenzen landed Brown in scoring position,
Reece Briggs picking up the RBI with a sacrifice fly for the 2-0 score.
Both teams blew through the second, third and fourth innings, with two Panthers grounding out and two striking out with
Victoria Abrams in the circle. The fifth inning swung the momentum to Georgia State, as the Panthers secured the lead in the fifth. Two walks and a single put Georgia State in scoring position, an error tallying the first run. A single from Maia Mumpfield scored two more, securing the lead for the Panthers, 3-2 in the fifth. Pitcher Makayla Stephens helped Georgia State to hold onto the lead through the sixth inning.
With the one-run lead, Georgia State looked to secure the win in the bottom of the seventh, where ULM looked to tie it up or walk off the win.
Jacelyn Buck walked and
Carys Platt singled to build energy for the Warhawks. A sacrifice bunt for
Brooklin Lippert advanced the runners, placing Buck in scoring position for the tie. With two outs in the bottom of the seventh,
Meagan Brown played hero, hitting a two-RBI double for the walk-off win, 4-3.
Meagan Brown hit two doubles, picking up two RBIs, scoring a run and a stolen base. Zenzen also picked up two doubles, logging nine putouts in the contest.
Dakota Lake was credited with the win, allowing two hits, a run and a walk, striking out two batters.
Victoria Abrams saw four innings in the circle, allowing one hit and two runs, striking two Panthers.
ULM Softball will be back in action at the ULM Softball Complex tomorrow to wrap up the Sun Belt opening series. The Warhawks will take on the Georgia State Panthers on Sunday (March 16) at noon to wrap up the weekend.
