LAFAYETTE, La. – The ULM softball team (23-13, 4-2 Sun Belt) claimed 16 hits to defeat the Ragin' Cajuns (16-14, 3-3 Sun Belt) on Sunday afternoon (March 23) in Lafayette. After the home team held a lead through the fifth, six runs scored in the final two innings secured the Warhawks' first win over the Cajuns since 2021.
Â
An early lead taken by ULM in the first inning set the tone for the afternoon, as
Brooklin Lippert hit a lead-off single, following it up with stealing second.
Morgan Brown and
Hollie Thomas both singled to follow up, Thomas snagging an RBI as Lippert scored the first run. The Warhawks then held off the Cajuns to maintain the lead in the first.
Â
After a scoreless second and a 1-2-3 showing for ULM, the Cajuns took hold of the lead in the third. A wild pitch scored the tying run, with a double by Laney Credeur scoring three more Cajuns for the 4-1 lead. The Warhawks held on tight, however, as
Maddie Nichols walked to score in the fourth.
Meagan Brown then singled to right field, picking up two RBIs to tie it up at four runs apiece.
Â
In the bottom of the fourth, the home team found the lead yet again, as Maddie Hayden stole home for the fifth run. A scoreless fifth inning maintained the lead for the Cajuns. As the Warhawks fought for the rally,
Morgan Brown hit an RBI single, an error scoring herself and her sister for the two-run lead.
Reece Briggs followed things up with an RBI single for the eighth run. After holding the Cajuns to a scoreless sixth,
Meagan Brown and Thomas each hit an RBI single to round out the scoring in the seventh. Three outs in the bottom of the seventh secured the win for ULM, 10-5.
Â
Maddie Nichols was credited with the win, pitching her first complete game of the season. Seven Warhawks had multi-hit games, with Lippert and
Meagan Brown leading the team with three hits apiece. Brown also led the team with three RBIs on the day. Lippert and Thomas also picked up stolen bases on the day, with
Maryssa Zenzen leading the team yet again with nine putouts. The game marks the most hits allowed by the Cajuns all season and the largest margin of victory over the Cajuns for ULM since 1981.
Â
ULM Softball will return home to compete in its conference series against the Troy Trojans next weekend at the ULM Softball Complex. The Warhawks will face the Trojans in the first game of the series on Friday (March 28) at 6 p.m.
