MONROE, La. – The ULM softball team (26-13, 7-2 Sun Belt) swept their second Sun Belt series at home, this time against Troy (21-16, 3-6 Sun Belt), extending its win streak at home to 18. Troy got things going early, with an early 4-0 lead. Consistent bats from the Warhawks, however, kept the game tight, as they walked it off in the seventh.
The first pitch of the day was a single for Troy, the second became a two-run bomb to left field for the early 2-0 lead. Two walks and another single loaded the bases, a third walk scoring the third run of the first inning. To round out the early scoring, an RBI single made it a 4-0 contest for the Trojans.
ULM responded early, as a fielder's choice and throwing error scored both Brown sisters, cutting the lead down to two. A scoreless second inning maintained the Trojan lead, but after holding Troy scoreless in the third,
Elle Carter hit an RBI single to score the third run, chipping at the lead.
Troy's Makaley Boswell hit an RBI single in the fourth to extend the lead back to two. The bottom of the fourth inning, however, was ULM's shining moment.
Carys Platt reached on a fielder's choice and
Brooklin Lippert singled to get two on base.
Meagan Brown hit an RBI single to cut at the lead again.
Hollie Thomas then hit a two-RBI single to snag the first lead of the day for the Warhawks.
A scoreless fifth inning gave hope to the Warhawks with a one-run lead, 6-5. A
Morgan Brown RBI double then scored Lippert for the two-run lead in the sixth. But the Trojans were not finished. Annie Orman hit a two-run homer in the seventh to tie things up at seven runs. In an attempt to prevent extra innings, the Warhawks took their hand at yet another walk-off attempt.
Layla Thompson got on first with a single, advancing to second on a wild pitch. Platt then came up to bat with two outs, singling to the right and scoring Thompson for the 8-7 walk-off win. This is the fifth walk-off for the Warhawks this season, Platt's third.
Hollie Thomas led the squad with two RBIs on the day, also picking up her second-straight multi-hit game with two. Five Warhawks had two hits on the day:
Meagan Brown,
Morgan Brown, Thomas,
Maryssa Zenzen and Carter. Thomas also led the team with six putouts, the Warhawks picking up two double plays.
Dakota Lake (9-4) picks up another win, pitching five innings and allowing four hits, three runs and a walk. Lake also struck out four batters.
Bristin Bordeau also saw action, pitching two innings and allowing two hits, no runs and three walks.
The Warhawks will be back in action on Wednesday (April 2) at 6 p.m. for a midweek matchup, taking on Northwestern State at the ULM Softball Complex.
