BATON ROUGE, La. – The ULM softball team (15-8) snapped its 13-game win streak, falling to No. 4 LSU (19-1) in five innings in Baton Rouge. The Tigers got off to an early lead and while the Warhawks tried to rally, LSU continued to score.
While ULM could not find a scoring opportunity in the first inning, LSU fond three. A three-run homer to center field by Tori Edwards gave the Tigers the 3-0 lead in the first inning. A five-run second inning for LSU continued to build their momentum, with a single scoring two and another home run scoring three more.
ULM found their footing in the third inning, with
Meagan Brown hitting her own three-run homer to right field, chipping away at the deficit. The Warhawks went on to hold the Tigers to their first scoreless inning of the night. A
Maryssa Zenzen home run tacked another score on for ULM in the fourth, giving the hint of a comeback with a 4-8 score. However, LSU scored on a wild pitch, extending the lead to five after four innings. In the bottom of the fifth, three singles scored three runs to make it an eight-run game in the fifth, completing the run-rule with LSU finding victory, 12-4.
Meagan Brown led the team with three RBIs, hitting one of two home runs for ULM. This was Brown's third home run of the season, her second in the span of seven days. Zenzen also tallied a homer, her fifth of the season, leading the team.
Victoria Abrams is credited with the loss, pitching 1.2 innings and allowing three hits, seven runs and three walks.
The softball team will remain on the road, traveling to Florence, Alabama to compete in the UNA Tournament over the weekend. ULM will start tournament play against Samford on Friday (March 7) at 1:30 p.m. and will compete against North Alabama and Detroit-Mercy as well.
