Warhawks Close Season in Round 2 of Sun Belt Championships

Jakayla Johnson dropped 31 points to keep the Warhawks in the fight against Georgia Southern.

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The ULM women's basketball team (11-19, 7-11 Sun Belt) fell in Round 2 of the Sun Belt Championships to 12th-seeded Georgia Southern (16-17, 6-12 Sun Belt), 69-75. The Warhawks close out their season with veteran players hitting team-high numbers, forcing 16 turnovers in the game. 
 
The Warhawks close out a season defined by breaking records and looking to meet expectations from the 2023-24 season. Jakayla Johnson reached her 1,000th career point and was named All-Sun Belt First Team. Multiple Warhawks, including Johnson, move into the rankings of all-time ULM players in points, rebounds and free throw percentage. ULM scored 117 points against Central Baptist, tying the record for most points scored in a game. The 57-point victory ranks sixth in program history for highest margin of victory. The Warhawks had 4,509 fans cheering them on against Louisiana Christian, the highest attendance since 1986 and eighth-highest attendance all-time. 
 
Jakayla Johnson dropped a season-high 31 points, her first 30-point game this season. Johnson shot 14-15 from the free throw line and tallied four rebounds, two assists and a steal. Sakyia White also scored in double figures, posting 12 points, eight boards, three steals and two blocks to lead the defensive efforts for the Warhawks. 
 
Katlyn Manuel got the Warhawks started early, picking up four points for the 4-0 lead in the first two minutes of the contest. ULM continued to force Georgia Southern turnovers to develop the lead, with White credited with a steal and score to make it a 12-8 game early. The Eagles snagged the first two triples of the game to cut the lead down, gaining momentum. Georgia Southern shot 3-3 from the field to close the quarter, tying it up at 20 apiece. Georgia Southern got hot in the second quarter, outscoring the Warhawks 25-13. The Eagles picked up a 9-0 scoring run to open up, dropping multiple threes for the double-digit lead. While ULM closed the half shooting 3-3 from the field, it was a 12-point deficit at the half, 33-45.
 
Both teams opened the second half in a scoring drought for several minutes, each team fighting defensively to put up stops. The Warhawks held Georgia Southern shooting 0-4 from the field to go on a four-minute scoring drought while they worked to cut down the lead on their end. The lone triple of the day for ULM came from Johnson, cutting the lead to eight. Johnson continued to battle, putting up 13 points to outscore the Eagles, 16-10 in the third. ULM battled to cut the lead down to two, forcing five turnovers in the final quarter. Brikayla Gray fought for the three-point play, starting a 7-0 run to keep the Warhawks in the game in the final minute of the game. Free throws extended the Eagles' lead, ending the game to send Georgia Southern to the next round of the Sun Belt Championships, 69-75.

"I'm proud of the way our players competed," said head coach Missy Bilderback. "[How they played] really speaks to the character of the team we have. They're great people and they work hard every day."
