Boone, N.C. – The ULM softball team (29-16, 9-5 Sun Belt) defeated App State (17-22, 7-7 Sun Belt) on Saturday afternoon (April 12) in Boone.
Morgan Brown hit two home runs and picked up six RBIs in the contest.
The Warhawks struck first in the contest, as both Brown sisters got on base early and
Maryssa Zenzen singled to score the first run. After a double play ended the first inning, ULM put up a four-spot in the second. Three singles loaded the bases,
Meagan Brown grounding out and getting the RBI.
Morgan Brown followed things up with a three-run homer to make it a 5-0 lead in the second inning.
App State was able to get on the board in the bottom of the second, an RBI single cutting the lead to four. Three consecutive singles by ULM in the third loaded the bases yet again, pinch-hitter
Maddie Nichols reaching on an error to score two runs.
Morgan Brown followed that up with her second three-run homer of the game, tallying the score to 10-1.
The Mountaineers hit their own homer in the third, scoring their second run but striking out before they were able to score any more.
Elle Carter hit a single and
Layla Thompson doubled to left center to land in scoring position,
Carys Platt hitting an RBI single to make it a 12-run game for the Warhawks.
Another scoreless inning for App State sent ULM to the top of the order in the fifth,
Hollie Thomas singling to score
Meagan Brown for the 13
th run. After shutting down the Mountaineers, the game ended after five innings, 13-2.
Morgan Brown led the charge with six RBIs, also picking up two hits–both home runs.
Layla Thompson and
Carys Platt each had three hits, Thompson scoring three runs and Platt picking up two RBIs.
Brooklin Lippert,
Meagan Brown and
Maryssa Zenzen each stole a base as well.
Bristin Bordeau was credited with the win, pitching two innings and allowing no runs, no walks and striking out a batter.
Victoria Abrams pitched two innings as well, allowing two earned runs and a walk.
Dakota Lake closed things out in relief, pitching an inning to allow no hits, no runs, no walks and striking out the final Mountaineer batter.
The Warhawks will be facing the Mountaineers for the deciding game of the series on Sunday (April 13) at 11 a.m. CT.
