Warhawks Win Series Over Cajuns for First Time Since 2012

Isaiah Walker's go-ahead RBI single in the bottom of the seventh was the difference in Sunday's rubber match 3-2 win for ULM.

MONROE, La. – For the first time in 13 years, the ULM baseball team captured a series victory over the Ragin' Cajuns after a 3-2 win in the series rubber match on Sunday (April 13) afternoon at Lou St. Amant Field.

Isaiah Walker's go-ahead base hit in the bottom of the seventh inning that scored Michelle Artzberger gave the Warhawks (18-19, 5-10 Sun Belt) the lead as ULM hung on for its first SBC series win of the 2025 season. The Warhawks limited the Ragin' Cajuns (17-22, 8-7) to two runs throughout the game as two Ouachita Parish natives, Brennan Eager and Zach Shaw, combined to strike out seven Cajuns in nine innings of work.

The Cajuns jumped out to an early lead as Luke Yuhasz pulled the first pitch of the game down the left-field line for a double. Making his first career Sun Belt Conference start, Eager settled in and finished the inning with three groundouts as Yuhasz crossed home plate on an RBI groundout by Caleb Stelly for the first run of the game. JR Tollett pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the first as his team led 1-0 after one. Eager completed the second inning with a trio of groundouts and sent the Warhawks back to the plate. Henry Garcia Jr. led off the second with ULM's first hit of the game on a line drive to right for a single. With one swing of the bat, Colby Lunsford uncorked an 0-1 pitch over the left-field wall for his second home run of the weekend to give the Warhawks a 2-1 lead. Michelle Artzberger tripled off the top of the fence with two outs but was left on base to end the inning. Eager struck out two in a scoreless third and worked around a two-out hit and error off the bat of Yuhasz. Walker legged out an infield single to lead off the bottom of the third and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kade Dupont. On the first pitch of the next at-bat, Walker swiped his 18th bag of the season and stood at third base with one out. Tollett escaped the inning without any damage after throwing a strikeout and a groundout.

The visitors placed two runners in scoring position at the start of the fourth inning on hits by Stelly and Lee Amedee. Eager held the visitors to one run in the inning when Stelly crossed the plate on a groundout by Maddox Mandino to even the score, 2-2. Barham White lined a base hit up the middle with one out in the fourth before Tollett recorded the last two outs. A 6-4-3 double play erased a lead-off runner for the Cajuns in the fifth. With runners at second and third with two outs, Eager eliminated the scoring threat from the Cajuns with a groundout to Dupont and completed his fifth inning on the bump. Following a scoreless bottom of the fifth, Eager fired a 1-2-3 inning to finish his quality start and handed the baseball off to Shaw out of the bullpen. Lunsford walked, and White singled for the second time with two outs in the sixth before Tollett sent the game into the seventh even, 2-2.

Shaw punched out two Cajuns in a flawless seventh inning. Artzberger swung at the first pitch he saw and singled to left center. Tony Lindwedel advanced Artzberger to second on a sacrifice bunt. After a pitching change, Walker ripped the first pitch of his at-bat through the right side, which allowed Artzberger to slide in safely to pull ULM ahead. A fielding error and a walk created a scoring opportunity for the Ragin' Cajuns in the eighth. Shaw induced a key double play that ended the inning and sent the game into the bottom half of the eighth. ULM went down quietly in the eighth, and Shaw went back out to the mound for the final frame. Shaw continued to fool the Cajuns at the plate and struck out his fourth batter of the day for the first out. Artzberger took a ground ball to the bag himself for the second out of the inning. Lunsford gloved a chopper to third and fired across to first in time for the final out of the game to give the Warhawks the win, 3-2.

Three Warhawks contributed six of the team's eight hits after multi-hit performances from Walker, White and Artzberger. Walker's RBI hit was the lone base knock of the day for either team with a runner in scoring position, as the Warhawks held the Cajuns to 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position. ULM capitalized on 3-for-9 hitting with runners on, while the Cajuns were 2-for-12. Defensively, ULM turned two double plays despite committing two errors, while the Cajuns made one error in the field. The Warhawks fanned seven Cajuns at the plate while the Cajuns struck out three Warhawks.

ULM wraps up its homestand on Tuesday (April 15) night versus Louisiana Tech at 6 p.m.
