Warhawk Defense Maintains 20-0 Record at Home

Pitcher Victoria Abrams pitched her third complete game of the season in the 1-0 shutout.

MONROE, La. – The ULM softball team (31-16, 11-5 Sun Belt) defeated Georgia Southern (27-18, 11-5 Sun Belt) on Friday evening (April 17) at the ULM Softball Complex, cementing a 20-0 record at home. The name of the game was defense, as both teams battled in the pitching circle and in the field.

After a double play got the Warhawks out of a bases-loaded scenario, ULM struck first for the 1-0 lead. Brooklin Lippert hit the lead-off single, stealing second to get into scoring position. Morgan Brown got the lone RBI of the day, hitting a single to center field to score Lippert.

A second double play coming from Jacelyn Buck closed out the Eagles in the second inning, but two strikeouts came from Maddie Johnson to shut down a lead extension by ULM. Back-to-back strikeouts by Victoria Abrams in the third kept the momentum going to hold Georgia Southern without a score.

In the bottom of the third, the lone extra-base hit came from Hollie Thomas, who hit a double to left field to get into scoring position. But three outs caught up to the Warhawks, stranding her on base to maintain the 1-0 score. The Eagles landed two on base in the fourth, looking for a burst of action, but two ground-outs and a foul-out closed things out for them.

ULM went three-up, three-down in the fourth, fifth and sixth, as they continued to hold Georgia Southern without a score. In the top of the seventh, the Eagles looked to tie things up, hitting a single to get momentum building. But a strikeout and two ground-outs closed the inning and secured the 1-0 victory for the Warhawks.

Four Warhawks collected a hit each on the night: Brooklin Lippert, Morgan Brown, Hollie Thomas and Elle Carter. Maryssa Zenzen picked up 10 putouts, as the team logged two double plays for a season total of 25. Victoria Abrams was the hero of the game as she led her team to a strong defensive victory. Abrams pitched her third complete game of the season and second shutout, allowing five hits, no runs, two walks and striking out four batters.

ULM will be back in action against Georgia Southern on Friday (April 18) at 6 p.m. at the ULM Softball Complex.
