Warhawks Sweep Eagles in Defensive Battle

Hollie Thomas hit the walk-off winner for the 2-1 win, cementing the sweep.

MONROE, La. – The ULM softball team (33-16, 13-5 Sun Belt) defeated Georgia Southern (27-20, 11-7 Sun Belt) on Saturday afternoon (April 19) at the ULM Softball Complex, securing the Warhawks' third Sun Belt sweep of the season and the top spot in the Sun Belt standings.

Georgia Southern looked to strike first, a single putting a runner on base in the first. But the runner was stranded as ULM secured three outs. After two Warhawks singled to reach scoring position, they were left scoreless in the first as well.

Back-to-back strikeouts from Victoria Abrams gave Georgia Southern two outs, but a walk and a wild pitch set up a score off a fielding error, placing the Eagles ahead, 1-0, at the end of the second. Georgia Southern's defense carried their momentum into the bottom of the inning, holding ULM without a score.

After the Eagles went three-up, three-down in the third, Brooklin Lippert walked as the lead-off, advancing to second from Meagan Brown's sacrifice bunt. Morgan Brown followed that up with an RBI double to tie the score, 1-1. Defense was the name of the game in the close fight, as both teams were held without a score in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Abrams struck out three batters in the process to hold the Eagles without a score.

In the top of the seventh, a single, two stolen bases and a walk put two runners in scoring position for Georgia Southern. Dakota Lake entered the circle and struck out a batter, two more outs getting ULM out of the jam. Kelsey Kovar came in as a pinch hitter in the bottom of the seventh, getting hit by a pitch to land on base. Two singles by Lippert and Meagan Brown loaded the bases with one out. Hollie Thomas came up to bat, hitting an RBI single to walk off the win, 2-1, maintaining the undefeated streak at home.

Morgan Brown and Hollie Thomas both collected an RBI on the day, Thomas also leading the team with three hits and a stolen base. Dakota Lake was credited with the win, pitching the final inning and allowing no hits, no runs and no walks. Victoria Abrams had another satisfactory showing this weekend, pitching six innings and allowing four hits, one run, four walks. Abrams also struck out six batters in the contest.

The Warhawks have now extended their win streak to five, winning the most Sun Belt games in program history. In today's game, ULM also surpassed the season record for hits, recording 435 hits so far. The 22-0 record at home holds as the winningest home record in Division I, the Warhawks now one of five teams that are undefeated at home in 2025.

ULM will be back at home to defend their win streak on Tuesday (April 22) at 6 p.m., in a midweek game against Grambling State.
