MONROE, La. -- The ULM baseball team fell in the second game of its Sun Belt Conference series to Old Dominion, 9-5, on Saturday (April 26) afternoon at Lou St. Amant Field.
The Warhawks (21-22, 7-13 Sun Belt) stranded 16 runners on base and issued nine free passes on the mound while the Monarchs (14-25, 9-11 Sun Belt) handed out 11 combined walks and hit by pitches and left 11 runners on base. ULM managed to hit .273 with two outs, higher than ODU's .182 batting average, but the Monarchs outhit the Warhawks with runners on base (.286) and with runners in scoring position (.211).
After
Brennan Eager retired the first three Monarchs,
Isaiah Walker led off with a walk for the Warhawks before being stranded at second base to end the inning. ODU's Luke Waters opened the scoring with a solo home run in the top of the second. ULM responded with a run in the bottom of the second inning when
Major Brignon laid down a sacrifice bunt that scored
Barham White. Eager regrouped and tossed a three up, three down inning in the top of the third.
Bryce Blaser walked and
Henry Garcia Jr. singled in the bottom of the third to put two runners on before ODU tracked down the final out of the inning, leaving the score tied after three.
Waters knocked in another run on a double to left in the fourth. White singled for the second time in the fourth inning before the Monarchs turned an inning-ending double play.
Aidan Haynes escaped out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the fifth and kept the deficit at one run. ULM surged ahead in the bottom of the fifth when
Kade Dupont drove in
Tony Lindwedel, who led the inning off with a double, on a base hit to right field. After Dupont swiped second base, Blaser grounded a single through the hole to left and Dupont crossed home plate to give ULM the lead.
Michelle Artzberger singled for the Warhawks' fourth hit of the inning before the Monarchs ended the inning. ODU rallied for three runs in the top of the sixth with two hits and two walks. Brignon and Lindwedel walked and Dupont was hit by a pitch to load the bases in the sixth inning for ULM before ODU caught a line drive to maintain its 5-3 lead through six.
After the Monarchs extended the lead to 8-3 in the seventh, ULM loaded the bases in the bottom half of the inning with a trio of walks drawn by Garcia Jr., White and Brignon before the Monarchs avoided damage once again. In the bottom of the eighth, Artzberger lifted a sacrifice fly that trimmed ODU's lead in half. White singled for the third time and scored Dupont to bring ULM within three runs. ULM stranded two more runners in the inning and the Monarchs preserved a three-run cushion heading into the ninth. The Monarchs added an insurance run in the top of the ninth to make the score 9-5. Walker and Dupont reached on free passes with two outs in the ninth before ODU recorded the final out to even the series.
White recorded three hits in one game for the first time wearing a ULM uniform and drove in one run. Five different Warhawks registered one hit apiece. Joining White in the RBI column was Dupont, Blaser, Artzberger and Brignon, who all had one RBI. Lindwedel had ULM's lone extra-base hit with a double.
Eager took a no-decision after throwing 3.1 innings and striking out two and allowed four hits on two earned runs.
Aidan Haynes took the loss and went 2.1 innings, allowing three earned runs.
Brandon Brewer allowed two runs in 0.1 innings while
Ashton Bassett tossed 0.2 innings and allowed one run.
Seaver Sheets completed 1.1 innings and struck out one batter and surrendered a run while
Adam Tubbs did not allow an earned run in one inning pitched.
The rubber match between the Warhawks and Monarchs will be played Sunday (April 27) at 1 p.m. from Lou St. Amant Field.
