Warhawks Drop Final Midweek Contest of Season, 7-4, at Louisiana Tech

Bryce Blaser and Major Brignon both finished with two hits in the last midweek game of the season.

RUSTON, La. – The ULM baseball team fell in the season series finale to Louisiana Tech by a score of 7-4 on Tuesday (May 13) night at J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park in Ruston, La.

The Warhawks (21-31) rallied after trailing by four runs and cut Louisiana Tech's lead to one run in the fifth inning. The Bulldogs (29-22) plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and sealed the win with three shutout innings from the bullpen to capture the season series over the Warhawks.

In the top of the first, Isaiah Walker drew a walk on a full count and stole second base before Kade Dupont worked another walk to place two runners on. Louisiana Tech turned a double play on a line drive off the bat of Michelle Artzberger and escaped the inning without surrendering a run. ULM starter Ashton Bassett tossed a 1-2-3 bottom of the first inning that featured two strikeouts in a scoreless first. Barham White ripped a base hit to right field for the game's first hit. Following a fielder's choice and a walk by Major Brignon, Tony Lindwedel came through on an 0-2 count with an RBI base hit that scored Jake Haggard to open the scoring. The Bulldogs responded with a five-run fifth inning in the bottom of the second that included eight consecutive batters reaching safely. Following a scoreless top of the third, Joey Cirelli assumed pitching duties for the Warhawks on the mound and tossed a pair of strikeouts in a 1-2-3 third.

With two outs in the top of the fourth, Brignon grounded a single through the left side that scored White that trimmed the deficit to three. After Brandon Brewer tossed a spotless bottom of the fourth, the Warhawks closed the gap to one run after a two-out rally on hits by Artzberger, Henry Garcia Jr. and an RBI double by Bryce Blaser. Garcia Jr. crossed home plate after a throwing error by the Bulldogs to bring ULM within one. Hollis Huff navigated around a one-out hit by the Bulldogs and kept the margin to one run. Brignon singled and reached base for the third time of the game to start the top of the sixth frame, but were unable to push the tying run across home plate. Sebastian Mexico pushed Louisiana Tech's lead back to three runs with a two-RBI double with two outs in the sixth, and the Bulldogs led 7-4 after six innings.

Blaser singled in the top of the seventh with two outs for ULM's lone base runner. Zach Shaw completed a scoreless bottom of the seventh with one strikeout. Following a scoreless top of the eighth, Josh Gregoire pitched a three up, three down bottom of the eighth inning, which included a strikeout. Louisiana Tech's closer Blake Hooks recorded his eighth save of the season and did not allow a Warhawk to reach base in the top of the ninth to secure the win for the Bulldogs.

Blaser and Brignon both swung for multi-hit games with Brignon reaching base safely in three out of four plate appearances. Artzberger, Garcia Jr., White and Lindwedel all added hits as part of ULM's eight total hits on the night. Cirelli, Brewer, Huff, Shaw and Gregoire all pitched scoreless frames out of the bullpen, as the Warhawks' pitchers combined to throw seven strikeouts.

ULM will close out the season with a three-game home series versus South Alabama starting on Thursday (May 15) and continuing through Saturday (May 17) at Lou St. Amant Field.
