Warhawks Drop 2025 Season Finale to South Alabama, 9-7

Michelle Artzberger hit his 20th career home run in his final game after four seasons with the Warhawks.

MONROE, La. – The ULM baseball team completed its 2025 season by dropping the season finale versus South Alabama, 9-7, on Saturday (May 17) at Lou St. Amant Field.
 
The Warhawks overcame an early 3-0 deficit and plated a trio of runs in the fourth after two-out RBI hits by Major Brignon and Isaiah Walker and a solo home run in the fifth by Michelle Artzberger. The Jags regained the lead with a six-run inning in the seventh. ULM closed the gap to two runs with three in the seventh, but the Jags held on for the win and claimed the series victory.
 
South Alabama's Rett Johnson scored on a wild pitch and designated hitter John Smith poked an RBI single down the right field line in a two-run first inning for the Jaguars. Kade Dupont was hit by a pitch and Henry Garcia Jr. singled to give the Warhawks a pair of base runners in the bottom half of the first before South Alabama's Zach Willingham fired his first strikeout of the day to end the inning. Brennan Eager tossed a 1-2-3 top of the second and Jake Haggard walked for the Warhawks' lone base runner of the inning. Johnson belted his third home run of the season for the Jags' third run of the game to lead off the third. Senior outfielder Isaiah Walker singled in the bottom of the third before being cut down attempting to steal second base, and the Jags maintained a 3-0 lead through three innings.
 
Eager struck out the side in the top of the fourth inning in his second scoreless inning. Haggard drew his second walk of the afternoon and Tony Lindwedel singled through the left side with two outs in the bottom of the fourth. With two runners on, shortstop Major Brignon doubled down the left field line and scored Haggard and Lindwedel. Walker traded places with Brignon at second base and and tied the score at 3-3. Eager went back to work with another three up, three down frame in the top of the fifth. On the first pitch in the bottom of the fifth, senior first baseman Michelle Artzberger deposited his 20th career home run over the left field wall and gave the Warhawks a 4-3 lead. Eager turned in his third 1-2-3 inning in the sixth and finished up his final start of his freshman campaign allowing just three runs and striking out six. Walker singled with one out in the sixth and moved to second on a balk before reliever Jarrett Maresco recorded the last two outs.
 
South Alabama regained the lead in the top of the seventh after a six-run inning that included a bases-loaded walk by Greg Pettay, an RBI single by Johnson and a grand slam by Duncan Mathews. The Warhawks trimmed South Alabama's lead back to two runs in the bottom of the seventh after an RBI double by Barham White, an RBI groundout by Lindwedel, and an RBI infield single by Brignon. Seaver Sheets shut down the Jaguars' bats in the top of the eighth and kept the margin at two runs. The Warhawks had runners at second and third with two outs in the bottom of the eighth. South Alabama closer Andrew Floyd fired a crucial strikeout to end the inning and keep the Jags in the lead. Josh Gregoire tossed a shutout ninth inning and kept the Warhawks within two. Floyd wrapped up the game and completed the save with a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth and the Jags claimed the season finale, 9-7.
 
Before the game, Michael Federico announced he is stepping down as the head coach of ULM baseball. Federico completed his eighth year at the helm of the program with a record of 172-228-1.
 
The Warhawks wrapped up the 2025 campaign with an overall record of 22-33 and finished 8-22 in Sun Belt Conference play.
