CONWAY, S.C. -- The ULM baseball team dropped game two of its series at No. 14 Coastal Carolina by a score of 10-0 in seven innings on Friday (May 9) night at Springs Brooks Stadium in Conway, S.C.
The Warhawks (21-29, 7-19 Sun Belt) were held off the base paths and did not have a batter reach base through the first five innings as CCU's starting pitcher Jacob Morrison allowed one hit in six strong innings. The Chanticleers (40-11, 22-4) powered 14 hits and scored in every inning en route to their 40th win of the season.
After a scoreless top of the first tossed by Morrison, Walker Mitchell drove in Sebastian Alexander on an RBI groundout for CCU's first run. Colby Thorndyke brought home a pair of runs in the second inning on a 2-RBI double to left field and Caden Bodine plated Thorndyke to complete a three-run frame and increase the Chants' lead to four. Dom Tozzi singled home a run in the third and the Chanticleers led 5-0 through three innings.
Morrison capped off his fourth perfect inning with his second strikeout of the night in the top of the fourth. Bodine delivered his second RBI knock of the night with a double that scored Thorndyke to make the score 6-0. ULM was retired 1-2-3 in the fifth before a sacrifice fly increased the Chanticleers' advantage to 7-0 in the fifth.
Jake Haggard was the first Warhawk to reach base after smoking the first pitch of the sixth inning to left field for a base hit. After advancing on a wild pitch, Morrison struck out two Warhawks before
Isaiah Walker drew a walk. Morrison finished the inning with his sixth strikeout of the night and kept the Warhawks off the scoreboard. Two RBI base hits from the Chanticleers pushed the lead to 9-0 through six innings.
Bryce Blaser and
Marcus Aranda walked in a scoreless top of the seventh for ULM. Alexander produced the game-winning hit for the run spread in the bottom of the seventh to give Coastal a 10-0 victory.
On the mound for the Warhawks,
Landon Grigg was credited with the loss after throwing three innings and surrendering four earned runs and striking out one.
Aidan Haynes threw 2.0 innings and surrendered a pair of runs while
Hollis Huff and
Holden Hess both pitched 0.2 innings.
ULM will conclude its series at No. 14 Coastal Carolina on Saturday (May 10) from Springs Brooks Stadium with first pitch set for 1 p.m. ET/Noon CT on ESPN+.
