ULM Soccer Clinches Shutout Over Lions in Season Opener

The Warhawks opened yet another season with a shutout, scoring four goals by four different players.

MONROE, La. – The ULM women's soccer team (1-0) secured their first shutout of the season with a 4-0 victory over the Southeastern Louisiana Lions (0-1) on Thursday (Aug. 14). In the season opener, four different Warhawks scored goals in the second-straight season-opening shutout, dating back to last season.

The game began with a lot of back-and-forth for both squads, but a corner kick secured the lead for ULM. Beth Strutton nailed a header into the net, claiming her first goal of the season and third of her career. The goal was assisted by Margret Edda Bjarnadottir, who recorded her first Warhawk assist, 15th of her career. The goal was quickly followed by a yellow card on Strutton in the 18th minute.

Another goal came in the 36th minute from senior Skylar Blaise, who nailed her first goal of the season and 12th of her career. The assist came from fellow senior Sophia Youngman, who captured her first assist of 2025 and fourth of her career. The half closed with ULM ahead 2-0, only allowing the Lions to tack on one shot in the first 45 minutes.

While the second half was just as riddled with fouls as the first for ULM, two more goals came through to extend the Warhawk lead. In the 71st minute, Giulia Franco tallied a goal, the fifth of her career. She was assisted by Jaden Masters, notching her second career assist. Just six minutes later, Libby Holmes rounded out the captain scores, as she launched a header for the fourth and final goal of the match. This was Holmes' second career goal and Strutton's first career assist.

Three more yellow cards came for ULM in the second half, with Ava Goodman, Stacey Qosja and Bjarnadottir each tacking one on. The last time the Warhawks saw four or more yellow cards was five at Oklahoma last season. ULM outshot the Lions by an 8-1 margin, the Lions also unable to collect a shot on goal. The Warhawks also tallied nine corner kicks to SLU's one.

The Warhawks knocked back two goals from corner kicks, three coming from their three senior captains. Strutton led the team with a goal and an assist, collecting her first three points of the season. Multiple Warhawks also saw their first minutes at ULM, in Anna Roldaan, Goodman, Bjarnadottir, Ines de Lope Casanova, Lucia Gomez, Amy Sharkey, Maria Thania Gealon and Marisol Gomez. Roldaan, Goodman, Bjarnadottir, de Lope Casanova and Lucia Gomez also saw their first Warhawk starts.

Coming up next, the Warhawks will hit the road for a three-match road series, first facing the Central Arkansas Bears at 1 p.m. on Sunday (Aug. 17). Live stats will be available and streaming will be on ESPN+.
