Soccer Preview: Texas State

ULM Soccer looks to continue its home success by opening Sun Belt play at Brown Stadium.

MONROE, La. – The Warhawks (5-2) will host Sun Belt opponent Texas State (3-2-2) on Saturday (Sept. 13) at 7 p.m. CT at Brown Stadium to open conference play. The Warhawks look to continue momentum in the final week of nonconference play.

SCOUTING THE BOBCATS –

Texas State is currently 3-2-2 on the season, most recently claiming a 1-4 loss to Baylor. The Bobcats have faced four Power Five opponents so far, going 0-2-2 against them. They claimed ties over No. 19 Oklahoma and Texas A&M. In the win column, Texas State has defeated Stephen F. Austin, Incarnate Word and Our Lady of the Lake. The Bobcats were selected second in the Sun Belt Preseason Poll, with Victoria Meza chosen as Preseason Midfielder of the Year. Freshman Katrin Agustsdottir has been showing out so far this season as well, leading the team with 10 points (four goals, two assists).

SUN BELT HONORS –

Defender Libby Holmes was voted Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week on September 9, after a stellar week. Holmes led a defense that posted multiple clean sheets over the last week. The captain also posted a goal against Southern, the second of the match to extend the lead. This is the first player of the week honor for ULM Soccer since 2023, when Janet Stopka claimed the honors. The last time a Warhawk soccer player clinched Defensive Player of the Week was 2021, with Hailey Hillock recognized.

SET PIECES –

The Warhawks have been known to capitalize off set pieces this season, with seven of the team's 13 goals coming off corner kicks or free kicks. ULM also ranks 17th nationally in corner kicks, averaging 7.3 per game as they look for more scoring opportunities.

SERIES VS. TEXAS STATE –

This is the 28th meeting between the Bobcats and the Warhawks, meeting at Brown Stadium for the first time since 2023. The first meeting between the two teams was in 1999, ULM's inaugural season as a women's soccer program, where Texas State claimed the 2-0 win. The Warhawks have faced Texas State as conference opponents over two different spans, first in the Southland Conference (1999-2005) and again in the Sun Belt Conference (2013-25). The Bobcats lead the series, 18-8-1, going 8-4 at Brown Stadium. The most recent win for ULM was the last time they played at home against Texas State, claiming a 5-0 shutout win in 2023.

HOME SWEET HOME –

The Warhawks are currently undefeated at Brown Stadium going into Sun Belt play, defeating Southeastern Louisiana, Little Rock, Southern and North Texas. ULM has also posted three clean sheets at home this season, allowing one goal in four matches. The team has gone on a five-match win streak at home, dating back to last season. The longest home-win streak in program history is nine, starting October 3, 2004 against McNeese and concluding September 11, 2005 against Mississippi Valley State.

LAST TIME OUT –

MONROE, La. – The ULM soccer team took a 1-0 win over North Texas at Brown Stadium to conclude nonconference play. Giulia Franco scored the opening goal, with Jen Handy and the ULM defense fighting to maintain the score throughout the rest of the match.

The first half came up all Warhawks, as ULM scored in the first 10 minutes yet again to start off the lead. In the seventh minute, Franco scored her second goal of the season, assisted by Margret Edda Bjarnadottir. The Warhawk defense continued to prevent a score from the opponent, closing the first half with a 1-0 lead.

The Mean Green pushed offensively in the second half, trying to make something happen to tie the score. Handy held on with two saves in the half to prevent the tying score, with the ULM defense also keeping North Texas back to clinch the 1-0 win.
