HUNTSVILLE, Texas – ULM Volleyball avenged its loss earlier in the season to Houston Christian with a 3-1 (17-25, 25-15, 25-18, 25-22) win at the Bearkat Classic Friday afternoon.
Â
"Today was a nice win against a very competitive team," head coach Reid Gann said. "We played well in most areas of the match, but specifically blocking and serving made the difference for us."
Â
In the two categories, the Warhawks (9-4) bested HCU with six aces to four and ten blocks to six.
Â
The victory makes it four in a row for the Warhawks, the longest winning streak since the 2018 season.
Â
ULM started well in the first set as it held a 7-5 advantage, but the Huskies (5-7) settled in, scoring eight of the next ten points to take the lead. Another run by HCU later in the set sprung it into full control at 20-13. It took the first set without much resistance as the Warhawks fell behind 1-0 in the match.
Â
It was the Huskies with the strong start in set two with a 6-3 lead. Trailing by two, ULM had its first breakthrough of the contest, executing a 9-1 scoring run backed by two
Chavon Weaver kills and two aces.
Â
The Warhawks kept putting the pressure on and held a 20-12 mark. HCU made one last set push with three straight points, but ULM put an end to the set with five unanswered including an
Aniya Hall kill at the conclusion.
Â
Leading 8-6 in the third set, ULM ripped off six unanswered points, powered by two kills each from Hall and Weaver. The Huskies were able to draw within five points with a 5-2 run, but they were held in check for the rest of the set. The Warhawks controlled the tempo by preventing HCU runs and held on to take a 2-1 match lead.
Â
In set four, ULM raced out to a 6-2 advantage, with another 4-1 run putting it in further control at 10-5. The Warhawks kept rolling with scoring runs, using an 8-2 stretch to build an intimidating ten-point lead. HCU was not phased, however, as it scored six in a row to close the gap to four. ULM worked the set to match point at 24-17, but the Huskies produced another unanswered run, this time with five points. In the end, it was Weaver's final put-away that ended the match, as ULM earned the ninth win of the season.
Â
Hall finished the day with 19 kills, with
Kennedy Plummer and
Madison Derden also scoring double-digit marks.
Beril Celik had a career day at the line with seven total blocks.
Morgan Howard and
Paige Meins both had over 20 assists, and
