LAKE CHARLES, La. – A gritty win in set one gave way to a 3-0 sweep for ULM volleyball over Alcorn State Friday afternoon.
"Every win is a good win," head coach Reid Gan said. "I like how we came out today and took care of business against a scrappy Alcorn State team."
In the opening set, the Warhawks (3-2) assumed control early on, building a 13-7 lead. Trailing 18-12, the Lady Braves (0-4), helped by five ULM errors, produced an 8-0 scoring run as they surged to steal the lead away. A 5-2 Warhawk run, thanks in part to kills from
Aniya Hall,
Madison Derden, and
Chavon Weaver, gave them a narrow one-point lead late in the set.
After both teams went back-and-forth, Alcorn State held a 25-24 lead at set point, but three straight points from the Warhawks powered them to a 1-0 overall lead.
ULM started the second set strong with a 9-3 start before the Lady Braves worked the deficit to two points, trailing 11-9. The Warhawks responded with a 7-0 run, helped by two more aces from
Morgan Howard, to lead by 11. Alcorn State wasn't done yet, putting together its own seven unanswered run to create a 22-19 score late. ULM ended things as Hall delivered her fifth set-ending kill in as many matches.
Another strong Warhawks start headlined the third set with a 9-4 start powered by
Kenzie Behl's three-straight aces. Alcorn State fought back, scoring four of the next five points to narrow the margin before five unanswered ULM points set the gap again at 15-8. The Warhawks rode the momentum the rest of the way, never leading by less than five points en route to a three-set victory.
Hall finished with a team-leading 11 kills as Behl produced five aces. Howard totaled 21 assists, and Derden tallied double-digit digs.
ULM finishes the tournament tomorrow afternoon against McNeese at 1 p.m.
