MOBILE, Ala. – The ULM women's basketball team (7-8, 2-4 Sun Belt) came up just short of their second consecutive road win Saturday as they fell to South Alabama (9-7, 2-4 Sun Belt) 73-67. The Warhawks turned 29 Jaguar turnovers into 31 points but witnessed their hosts knock down 10 three-pointers on their way to shooting 47 percent overall from the field.
Â
Asjah Inniss established a new career high of 17 points to lead ULM in scoring which included converting on four of seven three-point attempts.
Nakiyah Mays-Prince recorded season highs in points (15) and rebounds (7) while adding a team high four assists.
J'Mani Ingram chipped in 10 points to extend her double-digit scoring streak to eight games.
Â
The Warhawks came out flying to start the game as steals by
Kamille Brown and
Keshunti Nichols resulted in a basket each for the pair and an immediate timeout by South Alabama. Nichols and Inniss added additional baskets off steals to put the visitors up 8-2. The Jaguars would eventually settle in and close the quarter on a 10-2 run to take a six-point lead.
Â
Back-to-back baskets from
Asia Barclay helped set the tone in the second quarter but the Jaguars would continue their solid shooting from the previous quarter. The Warhawks prevented the deficit from growing past nine and an eventual three-pointer from Inniss cut it down to three. South Alabama pushed the lead back to four, but Mays-Prince produced a 5-0 run all by herself to give ULM a halftime lead.
Â
The third quarter proved to be a struggle once again for the Warhawks as the Jaguars erupted for an 11-3 run out of the break behind three three-pointers. An additional two conversions from downtown extended the lead to 12 for the hosts but ULM again closed the quarter on a 5-0 run thanks to a corner three from Nichols and an Ingram layup off a steal by Nichols.
Â
After an initial period of trading baskets, the Warhawks broke through in the fourth quarter with a 9-0 run as another tough shot from Ingram off a turnover restored the lead for the visitors. Despite more three-pointers from South Alabama, the Warhawks got it back to within one point off of an Ingram free-throw. The Jaguars held their nerve down the stretch and converted on enough free-throws to hold on for the win.
Â
ULM will return home to Monroe for their next contest on Wednesday against Troy. Tipoff at Fant-Ewing Coliseum is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT.
