MONROE, La. – The ULM men's basketball team (3-18, 0-9 Sun Belt) will host Georgia Southern (13-9, 5-4 Sun Belt) on Friday (Jan. 30) at 2 p.m. CT at Grambling State, due to Winter Storm Fern. The Warhawks look to bounce back after a loss at App State over the weekend. Due to the ice storm that hit the Northeast Louisiana area, the game will be free entry to all.
SERIES HISTORY –
ULM will face the Eagles for the 30th time in the program's history, a series dating back to the late 1970's. On a three-game win streak, Georgia Southern looks to extend to four against the Warhawks in Monroe. ULM still holds the edge when hosting the Eagles with a 7-5 series record, but last season the Eagles claimed the series lead, the record now 15-14 in favor of GS. The last win for ULM was 2023, a 72-59 victory in Statesboro. The last win ULM claimed over Georgia Southern at home was in 2019.
SCOUTING THE EAGLES –
Georgia Southern enters Monroe on Thursday with a 13-9 overall record, sitting just above .500 in conference play with a 5-4 mark. The Eagles have claimed notable league victories over Coastal Carolina, Old Dominion and James Madison with two overtime wins. Georgia Southern leads the conference in attempts from the free throw line and from beyond the arc. With a turnover margin of 4.1, the Eagles also rank 19th nationally. Spudd Webb leads the Eagles in scoring with 16.1 points per game, sitting at second in the league with 40 steals. Alden Applewhite averages 5.8 rebounds to lead the team, claiming four double-doubles this season. Shainen Carter is also a defensive leader for Georgia Southern, averaging two blocks per game to lead the Sun Belt in conference play.
LEADING THE TEAM –
Four Warhawks average over 10 points per game, with Krystian Lewis leading the pack at 16.2 ppg. He tallied three-straight 20+-point games from January 3 through 10. He also leads the team in assists (3.0) and steals (1.7). MJ Russell (15.7), Lavell Brodnex (13.3) and Renars Sondors (10.8) also post double-digit scoring averages this season.
BRODNEX BOARDS –
Lavell Brodnex has been leading the charge in rebounding since his debut for ULM on November 13, averaging 8.3 boards per game. The rebound average ranks 48th nationally and second in the Sun Belt. Brodnex is also fifth in the conference in offensive rebounds (2.6) and third in defensive rebounds (5.7). The forward reached a career-high 18 rebounds against Arkansas Baptist, the second-most recorded by a Sun Belt player this season.
FROM THE CHARITY STRIPE –
The Warhawks have attempted double-digit free throws in 19 of their 21 contests, attempting a whopping 41 free throws against Arkansas Baptist on December 9, making 31. The 41 attempted free throws is the second-most attempted by a Sun Belt team this season. Against the Ragin' Cajuns on December 20, ULM hit 26 free throws. Krystian Lewis led the charge, hitting 15 of his 18 free throws. Lewis sits at fourth in the Sun Belt and is ranked 45th nationally with 106 free throws made.
