BOONE, N.C. – The ULM women's basketball team (9-12, 4-8 Sun Belt) battled through adversity on the road to claim a win Friday night against App State (10-11, 3-8 Sun Belt) 78-70. The win was the first against the Mountaineers in program history and was fueled by a season best 49 percent shooting from the field by the Warhawks.
Â
Nakiyah Mays-Prince paced ULM in scoring once again as she scored 18 points to go with a team high six assists and three steals.
J'Mani Ingram finished with 15 points while the Warhawks got at least eight points out of
Marcavia Shavers,
Kamille Brown and
Marissa Gasaway.
Â
After a sluggish start by both teams, ULM put together an 8-0 run thanks to a pair of baskets by Gasaway and Ingram to go up by five points. The Warhawks answered a three-pointer from the Mountaineers with a layup from Brown and an offensive putback by Shavers before eventually taking a four-point lead into the first break.  Â
Â
The Warhawks punched first in the second quarter as
Asia Barclay got loose for a pair of baskets that helped spur an 8-2 run to secure the visitors' first double-digit lead of the game. As App State attempted to chip into the lead, Gasaway would record another two baskets off of offensive rebounds to help push the lead back to 10 before ULM settled for a seven-point lead at halftime.
Â
Keshunti Nichols helped set the tone from the jump in the third quarter with a three-point play off of a putback. Back-to-back baskets by Shavers and Mays-Prince would push the lead to 15 but the Mountaineers would mount a comeback with an 8-1 run. The Warhawks remained aggressive in getting to the free-throw line to keep the lead around 10 and secured a 12-point lead after three quarters thanks to a corner three-pointer from
Jazmine Jackson.
Â
ULM remained efficient from the field to begin the fourth quarter as they got another three-pointer from Jackson and a tough layup from Ingram. The Warhawks would push the lead to its highest of the game at 16 after Mays-Prince was fouled on a three-point attempt and made all three free-throws. An 8-2 run by App State was interrupted by back-to-back baskets by Inniss. The Mountaineers got hot from three-point range but a final long-range effort by Mays-Prince proved to be the decisive final blow for the visitors.
Â
The Warhawks outscored App State 22-12 in second chance points and 46-32 in points in the paint. They forced 18 turnovers behind 12 steals and out-rebounded their hosts 37-34.
