Men’s Basketball Preview: Southern Miss

The Warhawks take the trip down to the Hub City to make a second attempt at defeating the Golden Eagles this season.

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The ULM men's basketball team (3-14, 0-5 Sun Belt) make the return trip to Hattiesburg in the second game of a road trip weekend, facing Southern Miss (10-7, 4-1 Sun Belt) on Saturday (Jan. 10). Tipoff against the Golden Eagles is scheduled for 2 p.m. CT.

SERIES HISTORY – 

ULM will face Southern Miss for the 47th matchup in program history, dating back to the 1952-53 season. Already having played this season in Monroe, Southern Miss holds the edge after a 87-73 victory on January 1. The Golden Eagles also hold a 7-19 advantage when playing in Hattiesburg. Since becoming Sun Belt foes, the Golden Eagles hold the 3-6 advantage since 2020, as the Warhawks look to split the series for the third season in a row.

SCOUTING THE GOLDEN EAGLES –

The Golden Eagles sit at 10-7 across the season, currently on a three-game win streak to become 4-1 in Sun Belt play. The Golden Eagles were pegged to finish 12th in the Sun Belt in the preseason poll and now sit at second. Most recently, Southern Miss picked up an 80-70 win over Texas State. Tylik Weeks leads the team and the conference with a 17.9 scoring average. Weeks also picked up Sun Belt Player of the Week on November 25 after a 37-point showing against North Florida. On the defensive side, Djahi Binet averages 7.0 rebounds to lead the team, ranking sixth in the Sun Belt.

LEADING THE TEAM –

Four Warhawks average over 10 points per game, Krystian Lewis leading the pack in scoring with 17.2 points per game. Most recently, he tallied his second-straight 20+ point game in Lafayette (Jan. 8). He also leads the team in assists (3.0) and steals (1.7). Lavell Brodnex has collected 121 rebounds across 14 games, averaging 8.6 to lead the Warhawks and rank second in the conference. 

TRIPLE THE FUN –

On December 17 against South Alabama, ULM hit 19 three-pointers, 12 coming in the first half. The 19 triples is a team-high across all Sun Belt teams this season, Krystian Lewis claiming the Sun Belt high with eight triples. The Warhawks sit at second in the conference with a .352 three-point percentage.

FROM THE CHARITY STRIPE – 

The Warhawks have attempted double-digit free throws in 16 of their 17 contests, attempting a whopping 41 free throws against Arkansas Baptist on December 9, making 31. The 41 attempted free throws is the second-most attempted by a Sun Belt team this season. Against the Ragin' Cajuns on December 20, ULM hit 26 free throws. Krystian Lewis led the charge, hitting 15 of his 18 free throws. Lewis leads the Sun Belt and is ranked ninth nationally with 98 free throws made.
