MONROE, La. — The ULM volleyball team (5-11) fell 1-3 to Marshall (10-4) on Friday evening, suffering its first home loss of the season. Â
Setters Bre Perrin and Morgan Howard each recorded double-doubles on the match. It was Perrin's fifth of the season, with 21 assists and 13 digs, and Howard's third, with 13 assists and 12 digs. Aniya Hall led the offense with 13 kills, and added eight digs, and a block and an ace. Â
The Warhawks opened the match with an Aniya Hall kill, then traded points with Marshall all the way to the media timeout. Points were hard to come by early, with long rallies across the court. Marshall found a 15-14 lead at the break, but three straight Warhawk points made it 17-15 ULM. The Thundering Herd strung together their own points, going on a 10-1 run to take the set. Â
The Warhawks swung the match's momentum in their favor to open the second set, leading 4-3 on another kill from Aniya Hall. ULM broke out to a five-point lead with six consecutive points, thanks to a kill from Hall, a block from Zharia Alleyne and Abby Cunningham and three Thundering Herd errors. The Warhawks carried that lead into the break, going up 15-9 on an ace by Bre Perrin. ULM led by as much as 12, shutting down each Marshall attempt, and sealing the set 25-13 on a swing from Hall to even the score. Â
Marshall got right back into the match, taking a seven-point run to lead 10-3 at the beginning of the third. The Warhawks battled back, cutting the deficit to one point on a 6-1 run that saw four total kills from Grace Troxell, with three of those coming back-to-back-to-back. Marshall kept its lead at two points heading into the media timeout, but outscored ULM 9-2 to lead 23-15. The Warhawks attempted to lengthen the set, forcing three straight set points, but the Thundering Herd went up 2-1, taking the set 25-19. Â
The fourth set opened with Tatum Clay's first ace of the match. ULM scored in batches, steadily building its lead to eight points on serves from Eden Pietrzak, Bre Perrin and Tatum Clay. Back-to-back aces from Clay made it 15-8 at the break, but Marshall was able to regroup. A seven-point spree by the Thundering Herd put ULM on the defensive and cut the lead to just two at 20-18. Another straight five points gave Marshall its first lead of the set and brought the match to match point. The Thundering Herd clinched the match 3-1, with a fourth-set score of 25-23. Â
The Warhawks will take the court again tomorrow, October 3 to face Marshall. First serve is set for 1 p.m. Â
