MONROE, La. – The ULM Warhawks (4-9-1, 1-4 Sun Belt) took on one of the strongest scoring offenses in the Sun Belt in Georgia State (8-4-1, 3-2 Sun Belt), holding them to just one shot on target in the 2-1 score.
Ines de Lope Casanova took care of business against her former team, matching her career high of three points. She totaled two shots to go with her goal and assist, now having scored in each of the last three matches.
ULM opened with strong possession, three quick corners creating scoring opportunities. Shots from
Jenni Huttunen and
Charli Harris put the pressure on the Panthers, hoping to break through. A corner from de Lope Casanova allowed for Huttunen to hit the back of the net, Warhawks collecting the 1-0 lead 24 minutes into the contest.
Back-to-back yellow cards for each team kept the match tense, as the Warhawks maintained attacking possession. But Aaliyah Faddoul continued her stride as GSU's leading scorer, breaking past
Jen Handy for the tying score in the 41
stminute.
Tied up at the half, the Panthers fought to come from behind in the second half. Set pieces created chances, while the ULM defense prevented shots on target, holding visitors to just one. De Lope then continued her reign as ULM's leading scorer on the team, a long ball careening past the keeper for the game winner.
Georgia State battled to find the equalizer for a second time in the match, but the Warhawks maintained possession to hold on. With the 2-1 victory, ULM picks up its first conference victory of the season. The Warhawks also pick up the first win over the Panthers since 3014.
Harris led the team with five shots, Huttunen just behind with four. Handy was resigned to just one save on the evening, the Warhawk defense keeping the ball at a safe distance.
ULM will hit the road to face Marshall on Sunday (Oct. 11). Kickoff in Huntington is slated for 2 p.m. CT / 3 p.m. ET.
