MONROE, La. – The ULM Warhawks (3-20, 0-11 Sun Belt) fell in a four-point game to Coastal Carolina (14-10, 7-5 Sun Belt) at Fant-Ewing Coliseum on Sunday (Feb. 1) afternoon.
Krystian Lewis took the lead for the Warhawks, hitting eight-of-17 from the floor to collect 20 points.
Lavell Brodnex made the return to capture his sixth double-double, posting 11 points and 10 boards.
MJ Russell posted 18 points, with four three-pointers and seven rebounds for his sixth-straight double digit game.
The Chanticleers got off to an early start, reaching a 7-0 score in the first four minutes as the Warhawks were left without a score. But a break in the scoring run by
Renars Sondors allowed for ULM to work on turning things around. In the following six minutes of the game, Russell tallied 11 points to cut down at Coastal's lead,
Ayomide Bamisile also adding to the tally. But even as the Warhawks battled to close in on the visitors, the Chanticleers hit their fifth three-pointer in 10 minutes to stretch ahead.
Diaz returned the favor of the three in the final 10 minutes of the first half, shooting 100% from beyond the arc and drilling two three-pointers. ULM also got hot in the paint thanks to three consecutive dunks for Brodnex, Russell and Lewis to show that the Warhawks were on their way back. As time ran out, however, eight unanswered points were scored by Coastal Carolina to extend the lead to double figures. The Warhawks responded yet again with back-to-back triples by Diaz and Brodnex in the final minute, making their own scoring run to settle for the 43-38 score at halftime.
Sondors hit his third triple of the day to open the half, finishing the contest with 18 points, four shots coming from beyond the arc. As fouls became more frequent, the Chanticleers and the Warhawks began trading free throws, CCU nailing six-of-eight in the second half, while ULM hit 10-of-14. The tides began to turn toward the home team as ULM was able to force a turnover, hit a shot and claim a defensive rebound for the tying three-pointer by Lewis.
As Coastal Carolina pulled away to a two-possession game, both teams began trading shots, ULM unable to cross the threshold and change the lead. AJ Dancler closed out the win for the Chanticleers, walking away with a 32-point showing as Coastal Carolina found the 83-79 win.
The Warhawks will hit the road for a midweek conference game, facing another Sun Belt East team in Old Dominion on Wednesday (Feb. 4). Tipoff in Norfolk, Virginia is slated for 6 p.m. CT.
