ULM’s Seventh-Inning Rally Sweeps FGCU

An early start was followed by a bounce-back in the seventh inning to claim victory.

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The ULM softball team (5-4) fended off FGCU (4-5) in a late rally to continue the sweep of the FGCU Eagle Invitational on Saturday evening (Feb. 14), 3-1. Six Warhawks claimed hits on the day to drive the offense ahead.

A single from freshman Kailey Monsef allowed for the Warhawks to start hot early, Meagan Brown's double scoring Monsef for the 1-0 score in the top of the first. ULM's defense then held the Eagles without a score in the first, continuing to put on the pressure.

While both teams were able to get runners on base, even in scoring position, it was a defensive fight as neither team could pick up a score in the second, third or fourth innings. Skylar Waggoner struck out two batters in the process to prevent the tying run. But two doubles from the home team in the fifth had FGCU tying things up, 1-1. The Warhawks fought to respond, but after loading the bases, the Eagles retired batter after batter to prevent the lead.

In the Warhawk offense's last inning of play, it was two walks and a single loaded the bases with one out on the board. Elle Carter was then walked as Monsef crossed home for the lead. A ground-out for Maryssa Zenzen scored another, as ULM headed to the bottom of the seventh with a two-run advantage. Dakota Lake then struck out two batters to shut down the inning as ULM claimed their fourth victory in a row.

Meagan Brown's double was the lone extra-base hit of the night, while five other Warhawks claimed hits. Carter and Zenzen join Brown to claim RBIs as well. Hollie Thomas stole the lone base of the game in the seventh, as ULM went on to find the lead. Seven putouts from Zenzen led the defense. Lake is credited with the win, seeing 1.2 innings of time and three strikeouts. Waggoner got the start as she pitched for 4.1 innings and struck out two batters. Ashanti McDade also saw time in the circle, allowing no runs to be scored.

ULM improves to 5-4 as the team looks to close out the FGCU Eagle Invitational in two games against Hofstra on Sunday (Feb. 15). First pitch of the first game is scheduled for 10 a.m. CT.
