Warhawks Win Fourth Straight 12-5 in Game One

Adam Brodnax got the win pitching five innings with six strikeouts.

MONROE, La. – Four hitters produced multi-RBI games to power ULM baseball (6-5) to a 12-5 win over Western Illinois (3-5) Friday afternoon.

The Warhawks' offense exploded with double-digit runs for the seventh time this season as the team now has four straight wins.

With a runner on at the top of the first inning, Adam Brodnax forced a pop out in the infield, which turned into a double play with a tag on the runner. He produced a strikeout with a full count to end the frame. Davis Mauzy and Bryce Blaser combined for back-to-back hits to make it 1-0 Warhawks. With two runners on, Sutton Lewis lined a ball to the right field corner to bring home Blaser. A sacrifice-fly and a wild pitch score two more as ULM held a 4-0 lead after one.

Brodnax pitched a 1-2-3 top of the second to keep the lead at four. Two errors and a Blaser RBI-single brought Zach White home, making it a five-run lead at the bottom of the second. Another three-up three-down kept the Leathernecks scoreless.

With two outs at the bottom of the third, Jackson Landry hit his second home run in as many games to make it a 6-0 lead after the third. Western Illinois got on the board with an RBI-single to shallow center field, cutting the lead to five. ULM responded in the next frame with a Kade Dupont two-RBI double, possessing an 8-1 lead going into the fifth.

Brodnax collected three more outs to get him through five innings, qualifying him for the win. His final line included five innings pitched with four hits allowed, one earned run and six strikeouts with 91 total pitches thrown.

Dayne Wray led off the bottom of the fifth with a bang, lining a solo homer to left field to make it 9-1 Warhawks. A sacrifice fly from Blaser and a Jake Haggard walk produced a ten-run lead. The Leathernecks threatened at the next frame with two runners on with one out, but a double play ended the opportunity, and the score remained 11-1.

WIU came alive at the top of the seventh, using two doubles to plate four runs, making the margin six runs. Haggard singled at the bottom frame to bring home Blaser, resulting in a 12-5 lead through seven innings. ULM pitching held the Leathernecks scoreless for the last two innings and secured the game one win.

Blaser led the team in RBI with three, while Dupont, Haggard and Wray also collected multi-RBI performances. Landry also produced a multi-hit performance.

The Warhawks will face WIU for game two tomorrow, with first pitch scheduled at 4 p.m.
