Warhawks Fall in Pitcher’s Duel, 1-0

A lone run in the fourth inning for the Gamecocks secured the victory.

OXFORD, Miss. – The ULM softball team (13-6) fell in a pitcher's duel to Jacksonville State (13-5), on Friday afternoon (Feb. 27). In the 1-0 victory, it was a lone run scored in the fourth inning to put the Gamecocks on top.

A 1-2-3 inning came for both teams through the second inning, the Warhawks getting a few on base in the bottom. But three outs closed out the second before a run was scored. The Gamecocks went three-up, three-down in the third as back-to-back singles got the Warhawks on base again. Unable to convert, the score remained tied 0-0 heading into the fourth.

A walk allowed for Jax State's Emma Elrod to advance through two outs, a single from Makalyn Kyse scoring Elrod for the lone run of the contest. Without a response in the fourth, the Gamecocks looked to respond, loading the bases with one out. Two foul-outs got the Warhawks out of the jam, keeping the score at 1-0.

Unable to score in the fifth, ULM looked to the sixth, as Maryssa Zenzen hit a triple to add to the four hits collected on the day. Even in scoring position, the final out was recorded as both teams entered the final inning. It was a 1-2-3 inning for both teams in the seventh, securing the 1-0 win for Jax State.

Zenzen posted the lone multi-hit game, with a double and a triple under her belt. Carys Platt and Meagan Brown both collected singles in the contest as well. Zenzen also led the defense with eight putouts at first base. Ashanti McDade was credited with the loss, pitching the complete game and striking out seven batters, while allowing three hits and one run.
