Men’s Basketball Preview: Old Dominion

The Warhawks travel back east to face Old Dominion in Norfolk for the second time in the series.

NORFOLK, Va. – The ULM men's basketball team (3-20, 0-11 Sun Belt) will head back east for a midweek conference game against Old Dominion (7-16, 4-7 Sun Belt) on Wednesday (Feb. 4) at 6 p.m. CT / 7 p.m. ET. The Warhawks look to find success on the road.

SERIES HISTORY –

ULM will face the Monarchs for just the third time in program history, the series beginning in 2024. Each team has claimed victory in a road game, both as the visiting team. The lone win for the Warhawks came in the first meeting, a seven-point victory in Norfolk. In the same calendar year, the Monarchs traveled to Monroe and claimed the overtime win. The Warhawks look to continue their win streak in Norfolk.

SCOUTING THE MONARCHS –

Old Dominion welcomes ULM to Chartway Arena for its first home game in two weeks, the opening home game of a five-game homestand. The Monarchs sit at 7-16 on the season and 4-7 in the Sun Belt, claiming league wins over James Madison, Coastal Carolina, App State and Arkansas State. Most recently, ODU fell at Texas State, 64-81. Ketron Shawleads the team in scoring, averaging 16.6 points per game to sit at fifth in the conference. On the defensive end, both Caelum Swanton-Rodger and Jordan Battle lead the Monarchs with 5.0 boards per game.

LEADING THE TEAM –

Four Warhawks average over 10 points per game, with Krystian Lewis leading the pack with 16.6 ppg. He tallied three-straight 20+-point games from January 3 through 10, most recently collecting 20 points vs. Coastal Carolina. He also leads the team in assists (3.0) and steals (1.7). MJ Russell (15.9), Lavell Brodnex (13.2) and Renars Sondors (11.3) also post double-digit scoring averages this season.

BRODNEX BOARDS –

Lavell Brodnex has been leading the charge in rebounding since his debut for ULM on November 13, averaging 8.4 boards per game. With his double-digit scoring average, Brodnex has posted six double-doubles so far this season, which is second in the Sun Belt. The forward reached a career-high 18 rebounds against Arkansas Baptist, the second-most recorded by a Sun Belt player this season.

COLLECTING MINUTES –

MJ Russell and Krystian Lewis, ULM's scoring leaders, also lead the Sun Belt with the most playing time per game. Russell averages just under 36 minutes per game to lead the league and rank 26th in the NCAA. Lewis is closely behind at 35.5 minutes, placing him second in the conference.
