Warhawks Conclude Play in Twisted Vines Bayou Bash

Maryssa Zenzen hit her second home run of the season, with Meagan Brown driving in three runs.

LAKE CHARLES, La. – The ULM softball team (1-4) dropped to the North Texas Mean Green (1-4) in a close 5-4 contest in the finale of the Twisted Vines Bayou Bash. The Warhawks opened with a lead in the first inning, but North Texas completed the comeback with a strong fourth inning.

A walk and a single in the top of the first allowed for Meagan Brown to hit an RBI double, scoring two. Skylar Waggoner helped maintain the lead with two strikeouts to keep it 2-0 after one inning. A few walks in the second gave potential for additional runs, but the North Texas defense kept things at bay, ULM doing the same in the bottom of the second.

Out the gate in the third, Maryssa Zenzen reached her second home run of the season, a solo shot to left field to make it a 3-0 score. A single and consecutive errors in the bottom of the inning kept the Mean Green alive as they scored their first run. A three-up, three-down fourth inning then set up North Texas for the bounce back.

A lead-off double by Moffitt turned the tides, an error allowing a score to cut the deficit to one. Slovak then hit a two-run homer to claim the lead, 4-3. After another 1-2-3 inning for the Warhawk offense, Harman hit a solo shot to left field for the two-run advantage. After a scoreless sixth, the ULM offense placed two on base, setting up an RBI single from Brown to cut the deficit to one. But the comeback was left there, North Texas claiming the 5-4 victory.

Meagan Brown and Elle Carter both had multi-hit games, Brown's three RBIs leading the team. Zenzen's home run, her second of the season, had her scoring a team-leading two runs. Hollie Thomas led the defense with six putouts. Skylar Waggoner is credited with the loss, striking out five batters across four innings and allowing four runs on three hits. Ashanti McDade closed out in the circle with two innings and a strikeout, allowing one run.

ULM drops to 1-4 across the season and in the Twisted Vines Bayou Bash. The softball team will open home play on Tuesday (Feb. 10) at the ULM Softball Complex, hosting Stephen F. Austin at 5 p.m.
