CONWAY, Ark. – The ULM softball team (16-11) split two games on the second day of the Milisa Moore/Shane Lamb Memorial Tournament, hosted by Central Arkansas (17-8). After a successful double-digit score against Chattanooga (10-14-1), the Warhawks was unable to plate any runners against the Bears.
Game 1: ULM 11, Chattanooga 8
Back-to-back strikeouts by
Ashanti McDade opened the contest, the Warhawks plated a few in the first inning. A lead-off single, followed by a walk, allowed
Morgan Brown to come up to bat, hitting an RBI single to tack on the first run. A throwing error then allowed both Brown sisters to cross home plate to conclude the inning, 3-0.
A scoreless second inning sent the teams to the third, Chattanooga with another 1-2-3. But a lead-off double from Brown in the bottom of the third had her in scoring position. A single then placed two on base as
Elle Carter came up to the plate, her ground-out scoring Brown. A wild pitch scored
Hollie Thomas, as both teams went to the fourth, ULM ahead 5-0.
A few hits got runners on base for the Mocs, but no runs were scored in the fourth. But an RBI double from Thomas in the fourth scored the sixth run of the game. Chattanooga got in on the action, as two singles set up a score in the fifth. After
Olivia Faggard got on base from a walk,
Dally Engle scored two more with her second career home run.
It was a four-run inning in the sixth as Chattanooga attempted to claw back from the brink, a two-RBI double adding to the tally. An RBI single and a throwing error then made it an 8-5 score through the top of the sixth. A walk and a single allowed another two-RBI double from
Morgan Brown to make it a 10-5 score, Faggard's RBI double making it 11. In the top of the seventh, the Mocs came close by placing two runners on, Lackey hitting a home run. But three outs concluded the game, ULM winning 11-8.
Morgan Brown led the team with a three-hit, three-RBI day, scoring four runs of her own, logging two doubles. Three other Warhawks in
Brooklin Lippert,
Hollie Thomas and
Carson Jansky also posted multi-hit games.
Ashanti McDade (4.2 IP) was credited with the win, striking out three and allowing one earned run.
Bristin Bordeau allowed one walk and three earned runs in 0.1 innings, while
Maddie Nichols pitched two innings, striking out two and allowing three earned runs.
Game 2: Central Arkansas 3, ULM 0
A three-up, three-down first inning opened things for the Warhawks, while two hits got runners on base for the Bears. But three fly-outs stranded three runners for UCA. Another scoreless inning for ULM in the second brought up the bottom of the inning, as a double and a walk set two runners on base. Addi Graham then tripled to score two, giving the Bears a 2-0 lead.
The Warhawks went three-up, three-down in the top of the third as the Bears extended their lead in the bottom. A walk and a wild pitch allowed for an RBI double to score the third run of the game. A quick and scoreless fourth brought up the fifth, as ULM left three on base. After landing two on base in the bottom, Central Arkansas grounded into a double play as ULM got out of the inning.
Hollie Thomas doubled to left center in the sixth, ULM prepared to plate some runners. But three outs came and concluded Warhawk opportunities. A quick three outs came in the bottom of the sixth, again for the Warhawks in the top of the seventh as ULM fell in a 3-0 score.
Elle Carter saw the only multi-hit game, four other Warhawks claiming hits on the day. Thomas' double was the lone extra-base hit of the game.
Dakota Lake (2.0 IP) was credited with the loss, striking out one and allowing two earned runs.
Skylar Waggoner pitched four innings as she struck out two batters and allowing one earned run.
The ULM softball team will face a rematch against Central Arkansas at the ULM Softball Complex on Tuesday (March 10). First pitch against the Bears is scheduled for 6 p.m.
