ULM Loses Series Finale 12-4

Jake Haggard collected his seventh homer of the season.

BOONE, N.C. – 12 runs scored by the opposition resulted in a 12-4 loss for ULM baseball (20-17, 8-7 Sun Belt) against App State (19-15, 7-8 Sun Belt) Sunday afternoon.

Jake Haggard got things started for ULM with a single to get on base. After a groundout moved him over to second, Marcus Aranda connected on a ball that was sent to left-center field. The centerfielder for the Mountaineers was initially ruled to have made the catch, but after a review, the call was overturned, resulting in a ground-rule double to give the Warhawks the 1-0 lead.

Three free passes at the bottom of the first inning loaded the bases for the home team. A wild pitch and sacrifice fly scored two runs and gave App State control with a one-run lead after one. Both teams faced scoreless frames in the second, maintaining the 2-1 score going into the third.

After another scoreless inning by ULM, a single and a walk put runners on first and second with no outs for the home team. A single scored a third run for the Mountaineers, resulting in a 3-1 ballgame. After a four-pitch walk, a double and single into right field scored three more as App State held a 6-1 lead after three.

A single by the home team was the only production in the fourth inning as the Warhawks went three-up, three-down for the third straight frame. Three more outs at the top of the fifth extended the streak to four innings for the ULM offense.

Haggard broke the scoreless drought in the top of the sixth with a solo home run into left field, bringing the Warhawks closer with a 6-2 score. ULM was presented with a chance at the top of the seventh inning with the bases loaded and one out. Garrett Wiethorn reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Jackson Landry to score. A throwing error gave Wiethorn a stolen base as Kade Dupont crossed the plate at home, making it a 6-4 game.

Things fell apart for the Warhawks in the bottom of the seventh. With five pitchers used in the frame, the home team was able to score six runs on three hits to take a 12-4 lead. App St. also benefited from six free passes, with three walks and three hit batters.

After two outs were made at the bottom of the eighth, three straight walks presented the Mountaineers with a chance to walk it off, but a groundout eliminated the opportunity and gave way to the top of the ninth. After three outs, the game was over, and the Warhawks left Boone with a series loss.

ULM returns to the diamond next weekend with a home series against Arkansas State at Lou St. Amant Field.
