6-0 Shutout Victory Secures Sun Belt Sweep for Warhawks

Seven batters were struck out as the defense withheld a score from the Panthers.

ATLANTA – A fourth Sun Belt shutout for the ULM Warhawks (32-18, 14-4 Sun Belt) set up the sweep against Georgia State (24-25, 4-14 Sun Belt) in Atlanta. In ULM's second-straight sweep, the Warhawks have now won eight in a row. The fourth Sun Belt shutout marks the most conference shutouts since 2002.

ULM scored six runs on five hits with another error-less game for the defense. Georgia State was unable to plate any runners, despite collecting four hits. The Warhawks scored in five of the seven innings to consistently bring runners home.

Another early start came in the opening frame for ULM, as a lead-off walk placed a runner on and Morgan Brown hit a double to score the first run. An opening strikeout from Skylar Waggoner set the tone for the defense, preventing a score in the first. After going 1-2-3 due to three strikeouts from Makayla Stephens, the Warhawk defense returned the favor by retiring three batters.

Carys Platt led off with a walk, advancing to third from a sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch. While Meagan Brown struck out, Platt was able to cross home for the second run of the game. Back-to-back strikeouts from Waggoner prevented a hit from the Panthers through three. Hollie Thomas led off in the fourth with her sixth home run of the season, making it a 3-0 score. Two-straight singles from GSU in the bottom frame swung momentum in favor of the home team, but even as the bases were loaded, ULM held on to escape the jam unscathed.

Stephens walked another Warhawk to lead off, the runner advancing to second on a passed ball. While Platt then struck out, the dropped ball and throwing error allowed for her to safely reach second base, Cecilia Gonzales crossing home for the score. Brooklin Lippert followed with an RBI single to settle it as a 5-0 game through five innings. Two strikeouts stranded a batter as the Panthers continued to work on plating runners.

Olivia Faggard led off the sixth with a double, Maryssa Zenzen following with one of her own, scoring Faggard for the sixth run of the game. Another 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the sixth gave the Panthers just three outs to find an answer. While Meagan Brown landed on base in the seventh, three outs kept the Warhawks without a score in the top of the seventh. A single brought momentum back to GSU, but a strikeout and two ground-outs ended the game as ULM snagged the sweep, 6-0.

Five different Warhawks recorded hits in the contest, Hollie Thomas hitting a home run. Morgan Brown, Olivia Faggard and Maryssa Zenzen each recorded doubles as well. Brooklin Lippert also stole two bases in the process. Faggard led the defense at first base with 11 putouts. Ashanti McDade entered in relief and was credited with the win, pitching four innings with four strikeouts, allowing a walk and two hits. Skylar Waggoner made the start, pitching three innings and allowing two hits and a walk while striking out three.

ULM improves to 14-4 in Sun Belt play, remaining in second place in the league and just one game out of first. The Warhawks also tied their record Sun Belt win count from 2025 at 14 with the win. The last time the team won more than 14 conference games was 2001 when it won 17. In the series against Georgia State, the Warhawks move to a 14-game win streak and a 23-18 record, leading 11-7 when in Atlanta.

Improving to 6-3 when playing Sun Belt schools on the road, the Warhawks will next travel to face Troy on Friday (April 24), first pitch slated for 6 p.m.
