Warhawks Go 10 Innings vs. Troy

A close back-and-forth contest between the teams sent the game to extra innings, Troy securing the win.

TROY, Ala. – The ULM Warhawks (34-19, 16-5 Sun Belt) dropped the third game of the series against Troy (32-18, 9-12 Sun Belt) on Sunday (April 26), snapping a 10-game win streak. Both teams recorded 11 hits, the Trojans posting two errors to ULM's one.

A lead-off single from Brooklin Lippert in the opening frame set up Morgan Brown's sixth home run of the season, driving in two runs for the lead. While two more runners landed on base in the inning, the Trojans stopped the bleeding at a 2-0 score. After reaching on an error, an RBI single from Kiley Huffman in the bottom of the first cut the lead to one.

With the one-run edge, two runners were left stranded in the top of the second for ULM, sending the game to the bottom. Back-to-back walks allowed for Huffman to come to the plate again with a runner in scoring position, the tying run crossing home. Both teams went three-up, three-down in the third, looking to break the tie.

Meagan Brown led off in the fourth with a single, Kelsey Kovar also landing on base. A walk brought up Morgan Brown yet again, who singled to drive in the third run and the lead for ULM. Megan Loftis led off with a single in the bottom frame, advancing to third as Presley Ivey hit the RBI single to tie the game again. While multiple runners landed on in the fifth, it was to no avail as the Warhawks stranded two more in the fifth. The ULM defense then kept the Trojans going 1-2-3 to keep the contest tied.

Three outs held the Warhawks again in the sixth, a double and a single getting Troy in position to break the tie. After the bases were loaded with two outs, a fly-out captured the third to keep things settled, 3-3. Both teams went three-up, three-down in the seventh to send the game to extra innings yet again.

Back-to-back singles were hit to lead off in the eighth, an intentional walk loading the bases with two outs. A third out was found as the game continued to the bottom of the eighth. Pitcher Skylar Waggoner struck out two batters to prevent the score as the contest headed for the ninth. The ninth had both teams quickly finding three outs, the 10th coming for both teams again. Two more singles and an intentional walk loaded the bases for the Warhawks with two outs, a ground-out leaving all three without a score. A walk and two singles then loaded the bases for the Trojans, a walk driving in the winning run as Troy walked it off, 4-3.

Brooklin Lippert and Meagan Brown both recorded three-hit days to lead the team, Morgan Brown recording two hits and three RBIs. Morgan recorded the lone extra-base hit with her home run. Kelsey Kovar led the team with eight putouts at catcher, Elle Carter claiming five assists. Skylar Waggoner went 7.2 innings and struck out six batters as she was credited with the loss.
