Baseball Drops Series Finale 7-3

Davis Mauzy produced his third home run of the season.

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – ULM baseball (24-24, 10-14 Sun Belt) suffered a 7-3 game three loss to Southern Miss (34-14, 16-8 Sun Belt) Sunday afternoon.

With two outs at the top of the first, Bryce Blaser lined a single up the middle to record the first hit of the day for the Warhawks, but a flyout to center ended the inning. Two walks put two runners on for the Golden Eagles at the bottom of the first inning before two consecutive strikeouts forced a scoreless game after one.

ULM threatened in the second inning with two runners at first and second, but a strikeout kept both teams tied. USM used an error to put a runner on, but Seaver Sheets once again ended the frame with a K.

After another zero was put up by the Warhawks offense, the Golden Eagles were able to load the bases with two outs at the bottom of the third inning. A bases-loaded walk and two singles produced four runs for the home run, giving Southern Miss a 4-0 lead after three.

The home team had an opportunity to extend the lead in the bottom of the next inning, but a pop-up to the first baseman kept the deficit at four runs through the fourth inning. Davis Mauzy lined a ball past the fence in left field for his third homer of the season, putting ULM on the board and cutting the gap to three runs.

In the bottom of the sixth, the home team added on to their lead once more. Three straight singles with two outs gave USM three runs to make it a 7-1 ballgame. A single by Kade Dupont and Davis Mauzy put runners at the corners with one out in the top frame of the seventh before a fielder's choice allowed Dupont to score, making it a five-run game. A Garrett Wiethorn single into right field scored another run, resulting in a 7-3 score.

Both teams were held scoreless going into the top of the ninth inning. The Warhawks were sent down in order as the sweep was finalized with a 7-3 result.

The Warhawks are back in action Tuesday night at Lou St. Amant Field vs. Mississippi Valley State at 6 p.m.
