BATTLE TO DEFEAT STAGE 4 CANCER
  • In April 2018, as a 16-year-old member of the All-Ohio Gold AAU team, he was kicked in the groin while attempting a dunk to finish a fastbreak
  • Continued to play in AAU tournaments for several weeks while experiencing excruciating pain
  • Underwent exploratory surgery in mid-June due to continued and increased swelling in the area and on June 22, 2018, was diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare type of cancer that forms in soft skeletal muscle tissue
  • Chance at survival was estimated at 50 percent with RMS at stage 4
  • A medical team at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital mapped out an aggressive 54-week treatment plan that included chemotherapy and radiation
  • Suffered a major setback nearly six months into his treatment (December 2018) when doctors discovered a tumor near his abdomen that wasn’t responding to treatment, so another surgery as scheduled for Jan. 2, 2019
  • The first of his 23 radiation treatments began on Feb. 4, 2019; his last day of chemotherapy came in mid-June
  • Lost 40 pounds over those 12 months, dropping from 200 to 160
  • Cleared to resume summer football workouts in late June prior to the 2019 season
  • Declared cancer free following diagnostic scans in September and December 2019
  • Playing time was closely monitored during 2019, but in the final game of the regular season, he ran a fade route and scored on a 15-yard reception vs. Lima Senior
  • Successfully petitioned for rare extension of athletic eligibility for a fifth year (2020-21)
