Kayla Armer is the associate head coach for ULM beach volleyball and assistant coach for Warhawk indoor volleyball. She was worked with both programs since June, 2019.
Armer’s duties include working with setters and offense, video breakdown, practice planning and recruiting for both programs.
She was promoted to associate head coach for beach volleyball prior to the start of the 2021 season.
“She's completely bought in to the process of learning and teaching and I'm not sure what I would do without her,” ULM volleyball head coach Charlie Olson said. “She does so much for us behind the scenes and works tirelessly to provide our beach team with the skilled training necessary to take us to the next level in the CCSA. I'm thankful she's part of our ULM family here on there Bayou and look forward to watching her continue to grow into an amazing coach."
The Warhawk beach volleyball program posted 14 victories in the spring of 2021, the fourth-most wins in program history, while appearing in its first conference tournament, playing in the Coastal Collegiate Sports Association Championship in Huntsville, Alabama. Armer helped coach the No. 1 pair of Audrey Brooks and Julia Blazek set a program record with 20 victories as No. 1 seeds and finished second for single-season victories in program history behind Catherine Griffith and Maile Sellers, who won 22 matches at the No. 2 position.
The COVID-19 pandemic provided for a difficult 2020 indoor schedule, with ULM playing just 23 matches, including 18 against Sun Belt Conference opponents. Senior transfer Haley Coulter paced the Warhawks with 161 kills and 18 blocks on the season and earned Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors following the opening weekend after posting 21 kills and 23 digs in the season-opening win over Lamar.
In her first season at ULM, the Warhawk indoor squad won 12 matches, the most by a ULM squad since the 2015 team won 14 matches. Armer helped the Warhawks to a 10-6 record in the non-conference slate. Armer helped coach sophomore setter McKinley Thiede, who finished with 589 assists, a 447 assist improvement from her freshman season. She also coached freshman setter Darby Fisher to 473 assists. Fisher had two double-doubles on the season while Thiede had one.
Armer came from Houston Baptist University where she was a four-year starting setter on the indoor volleyball team under Head Coach Trent Herman. During her four years she was named All-Southland Conference Honorable Mention in 2014 and 2015, All-Southland Conference First Team in 2016 and led the Huskies to a runner-up finish in the Southland Conference Tournament in 2015.
She was also named 2014, 2015 and 2016 First Team Academic All-Southland Conference as well as Second Team CoSIDA Academic All-District 7 in 2014. Kayla finished her indoor career as HBU's all-time assist leader with 5,070 assists in her four years. Kayla also played three years of beach volleyball where she went 40-17 with partner Tori Hinajosa at the No. 2 seed. The pair qualified for the 2018 USA Beach Volleyball Championships.
Armer graduated in 2017 with her undergrad in psychology, and then began work on her master's in sports management while playing her fifth year of beach volleyball.
