MONROE,
La.?Former ULM All-American Ben Sheets was named
the starting pitcher for the National League in Major League Baseball's 79th
All-Star Game at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday night.
Sheets, who played for the
Warhawks from 1997-99, was named the starter by National League manager Clint
Hurdle of the Colorado Rockies. The right-hander
owns a 10-3 record with a 2.85 ERA at the break for the Milwaukee Brewers ?
both rank sixth in the National League.
"It's a very huge
honor," Sheets said. "It's something I really didn't think about, but
right before I left, a lot of my teammates really wanted me to have this
opportunity. The more they asked me, the more I realized how big an opportunity
this would be."
This is the fourth All-Star Game appearance
for the two-time All-American and Olympic gold medal winner, but first as the
starter. Sheets is in his eight season with the Brewers after the team selected him with the 10th overall
pick in the 1999 draft.
The All-Star Game will be broadcast on FOX beginning at 7:00 p.m.
