NEW ORLEANS, La.?Tulane converted five-of-six at the free thrown line
over the final minute hanging on for a 77-72 victory over visiting ULM Saturday afternoon in
Fogleman Arena.
The Green Wave (9-3) took the lead for the first time since
early in the second half when Ashley Cranford converted an old-fashioned
three-point play with 3:29 remaining in the game.
On ULM's
next possession, Kassie Courtney pulled down an offensive rebound and drained a
jumper giving the Warhawks (8-4, 1-0 Sun Belt) a 69-68 lead. Tulane quickly broke the ULM press and Alendra Brown's layup gave the
Green Wave a lead they would not relinquish.
Brittany Lindsey led the Green Wave with 16 points, while Chassity
Brown and Alendra Brown each added 13.
Regena Jackson led the Warhawks with 13 points off the
bench. Shannon Lloyd had 10 points and
eight rebounds despite playing just seven minutes in the first half due to foul
trouble. Jessie Carrier also had 10
points for ULM.
The game was slowed by the officials whistle as the teams
combined to shoot 57 free throws. ULM was 20-of-27 (74.1
percent) from the line, while the Green Wave converted 24-of-30 (80.0 percent).
The Warhawks led for most of the second half after gaining
the lead for the first time in the game with a 16-4 run to close the first
half.
Tulane took a 31-22 lead on a layup by Tiffany Aidoo with
just under five minutes remaining in the opening period, then the Warhawks
began their assult.
Jordan Rawson and LaJeanna Howard drained jumpers and Ashley
Wallis put in a layup pulling ULM
with three, 31-28. Rawson and Carrier
had steals on back-to-back possessions setting up two of the scores.
Following a pair of Tulane free throws and a layup by
Chassity Brown, which extended the lead back out to seven, Dyamond Hogg and
Carrier hit back-to-back three-pointers closing the gap to 35-34. Hogg tied the game with a free throw and
Carrier hit another three putting ULM
ahead 38-35.
The Warhawks settled for a 38-37 lead at the break following
a Green Wave bucket at the buzzer.
The Warhawks return to Sun Belt Conference play on Jan. 2 at
Denver. ULM defeated Louisiana-Lafayette 72-59 last
Saturday in its conference opener, while the Pioneers (4-6, 0-1) dropped a
72-56 decision at home to North Texas in their Sun Belt opener, also last
Saturday.
