Warhawks Crush Nicholls State 16-7 Sweeping the Season Opening Series

Baseball

THIBODAUX, La.?Kyle Suire struck again going 5-for-6, with six RBIs and his second home run of the weekend leading ULM to a 16-7 victory and three-game sweep of Nicholls State.

Suire finished the opening weekend of the season 10-for-16 (.625) with seven RBIs and six runs scored. The senior second baseman also extended his hit streak to a career-high nine games dating back to last season.

Senior Josh Lett (1-0) kept the Warhawks in the game early and stayed consistent throughout allowing just one unearned run on six hits through five innings.

ULM (3-0) has now won seven straight over the Colonels (0-3).

In a park that yielded just five home runs all of last season, the Warhawks belted out five on the weekend ? four on Sunday ? including back-to-back-to-back blasts from Suire, Dexter Fontenot and A.J. Siggers in the fourth inning. Shortstop Ben Soignier got in the mix with his first homer of the season, a two-run blast, in the top of the fifth.

Fontenot finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs while Siggers went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs driven in. Matt Collins singled in all three of his at-bats and Soignier scored four times after a 2-for-3 day at the plate with a pair of walks.

The Warhawks sent 27 batters to the plate in the third, fourth and fifth innings scoring five runs in the first two and four in the latter.

ULM belted out 20 hits after putting 14 on the board yesterday. After winning 1-0 in Friday's season opener, the Warhawks put up a combined 27 runs in the final two games of the series.

Suire, Fontenot and Siggers also went back-to-back-to-back in the third inning with a single, double and a triple all of which produced runs.

Following Soignier's home run in the fifth, Ryan McMillan scorched a double down the third base line scoring a pair; the junior catcher finished the game with three RBIs.

The Warhawk batters were not intimidated by the numerous scouts in attendance to watch Nicholls' starter Ryan Harding (0-1) tagging him for five runs on seven hits in just 2 2/3 innings.

The Warhawks travel to Hattiesburg, Miss., Tuesday night for a single game against No. 33 Southern Mississippi with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m. The game can be heard live on The Peach 99.3 FM and on ULMAthletics.com. Live stats for the game will also be available on ULMAthletics.com.
