Tech scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning breaking a 6-6 tie en
route to an 11-7 victory over ULM
in front of 2,405 fans Wednesday night at Warhawk Field.
The crowed was the largest at Warhawk Field since March 9,
2004 when 3,651 showed up to watch the Warhawks take on LSU.
The Bulldog (6-0) rally in the seventh came with two outs
and no runners on base. Patrick Thomas got
things going with a single to left field and came around to score on a single
to center by Jericho Jones. Two more
runs came across on a single by Albie Goulder and a subsequent error by the
Warhawks.
Jones (2-0) entered the game in relief of starter Andrew
Lassere in the fourth inning after the southpaw allowed four runs on six hits
in three innings. Jones picked up his
second win of the season after striking out six and allowing three runs on
three hits.
The Warhawks (4-1) belted out three home runs in their home
opener and struck out 11 Louisiana Tech batters. Ben Soignier, Dexter Fontenot and A.J.
Siggers all sent their second home run of the season out of the park.
Aaron Lorio earned his first save of the season throwing the
final 2 2/3 innings of the game.
Soignier started on the mound for the Warhawks going 3 1/3
innings allowing six runs, three earned, on six hits while striking out
six. Senior southpaw Jared Jennings
(0-1) suffered the loss for ULM
allowing a pair of earned runs ? three total ? in 3 2/3 innings scattering five
hits and striking out four.
Soignier led the Warhawks going 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs
and two runs scored. Siggers also
recorded a pair of hits going 2-for-5 with three RBIs.
La. Tech jumped out with four runs in the top of the first
sparked by a lead-off homer by Adam Cobb.
ULM struck back tying the game at 4-4
with two in the first and one in both the second and third innings.
The Bulldogs regained the lead in the fourth with two runs,
but ULM
countered with a pair in the fifth courtesy of Siggers' two run homer. Soignier's home run came in the bottom half
of the seventh closing the gap to 9-7.
La. Tech tacked on a pair of insurance
runs in the top of the ninth inning.
The Warhawks continue their nine game homestand this weekend
with a three game set against old Southland Conference rival Sam Houston
State (2-2). First pitch between ULM and Bearkats on Friday night is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
