MONROE, La.?ULM exploded for eight runs in the bottom of
the first and went on to complete a two-game sweep of Lamar with a 10-1 victory
Wednesday afternoon at Warhawk Field.
The Warhawks
(9-4, 2-1 Sun Belt) sent 12 batters to the plate in the opening frame and
pounded out eight hits in the inning.
In the
two-game series, ULM
combined for 22 runs and 34 hits.
Jon Prevost
and A.J. Siggers led the Warhawks on Wednesday each going 3-for-5 while Kyle
Suire, Kelvin York and Matt Laird all recorded two hits. Suire drove in four runs on the game giving
him 15 on the season in just 13 games.
Suire
started the barrage of offense with his fourth home run of the season, a
two-run shot to dead-away center field.
Ryan
McMillan, Siggers and York loaded the bases with back-to-back-to-back
singles. Matt Collins kept the streak
going with a single to center scoring McMillan.
York scored on a fielder's choice and Laird
cleared the bases with a two-run double of the wall in right field. Prevost returned the favor with a double to
left scoring McMillan before coming around to score on a passed ball.
Freshman
Jordy Poche (1-0) went five innings in his first career start not allowing a run
while scattering three hits. Drew Graham
and Ben Soignier closed out the final four innings allowing a run on five hits.
Suire drove
in the other two runs with a sacrifice fly in the third and a single in the
fifth scoring Wade and Laird.
Lamar (9-6)
used seven pitchers in the game with only two throwing two innings or
more. Starter Jim Niesuchouski (1-1)
didn't make it out of the first inning allowing three runs on three hits
recording just one out.
Ricky Testa
took the brunt of Warhawk onslaught allowing five runs ? four earned ? on six
hits in 1.2 innings.
The
Warhawks return to Sun Belt Conference play at New Orleans (8-3, 1-1) this weekend. ULM
will send Jared Jennings (1-2, 2.18) to the mound for the opener. The senior southpaw has a 0.55 ERA in his two
starts this season and has not issued a walk this year in 20.2 innings.
